Montana: The Reissue

Strong shoulders and power proportions – Claude Montana did it first and best. As one of the most radical designers of the 1980s, he shaped the defining silhouette of that era and influenced the style of an entire generation.
And now, provocative arbiter of vintage fashion Byronesque has reissued a very limited collection of signature Montana designs, with celebrated British fashion designer Gareth Pugh as design consultant, to be sold exclusively on Farfetch. ‘The 1980s really set the tone for design substance, integrity and craftsmanship,’ says Gill Linton, co-founder of Byronesque. ‘It’s so important to preserve those high standards of design and creativity. It’s why people are buying more contemporary vintage: they’re looking for unique, well-made clothes with more meaning than the mainstream. Montana is one of the last remaining brands of that calibre.’
This is the first time these designs have been seen in fashion for almost 20 years. Plus, each reissue in the 11-piece capsule has been selected to showcase elements of Claude Montana’s signature aesthetic, featuring styles from 1979 to 1994. This is fashion history, brought back for now.

The eagle dress

The most iconic piece in the Montana archive, the original design is held within the collections at the Met’s Costume Institute in New York. It’s a true labor of love: the reissue is even made with the same machine (one of only two left in the world) as the 1979 original and by the same craftsmen that worked with Claude to develop his embroidered designs.

The embroidered dress

Claude was known for working couture-level craftsmanship into his ready-to-wear. We’d put this hooded dress, made with 110 hours’ worth of hand beading, firmly in that category. Aside from its unparalleled intricacies, this reissue has been hand dyed by specialists to match the exact colour of the 1979 original. As for the cut, Byronesque sourced archival pieces to get that signature Montana shoulder just right.

The oversized shirt + leather bow

The designer himself was shy and reserved, but he famously let it all out on the runway. The leather bow, released in 1984, was born in the spirit of 1980s glamour. And the oversized shirt (brought out that same year) was a nod to the era’s mood for striking silhouettes. As a look, it’s a full-on Montana fashion fantasy.

The show robe

Claude’s use of colour was pioneering – more specifically, his eye for creating new tones that were produced exclusively for his creations. The 1979 show robe has been reissued in Montana green and blue colours, as well as black. Never a designer to under deliver on the details, every single stud and closure has been applied by hand.

The leather jumpsuit

Montana was way more than just giant shoulders. Jumpsuits and hoods were signatures of the brand, too. Originally from his 1990 collection, this head-to-toe leather design took its cues from London’s 1970s punk scene. Today’s reissue is cut by the leather experts, who worked with the designer.

The oversized coat

A piece that needs little introduction, the 1984 oversized coat showcases Claude’s inimitable approach to shape. His statement silhouettes were softer and cleaner than his contemporaries, but equally as commanding.
