WORDS BY JOSEPH FURNESS
Ever wondered who influences the influencers? @thecrediblesource has the answers. Run by Ave, a good-taste-in-everything kinda beau based in North Carolina, the curated Instagram account spotlights the real tastemakers of the world – the moodboard regulars that shop for themselves and not for others. Sure, the account occasionally features friends of Ave’s (all of whom are just as fly as the founder himself) and globally recognised celebs (usually Rihanna), but at no time does it give prominence to clout-chasers. As a result, @thecrediblesource lives up to its name by providing its followers with authentic fashion and lifestyle inspiration.
Intrigued to know what @thecrediblesource expects from its community, we asked Ave to offer up some general style advice and select his top picks for summer 2022. Keep reading to learn a thing or two.
@thecrediblesource: Style Tips
What style rules should one always follow?
I only have one rule when it comes to style: everything isn’t for everybody, so find your own lane. Other than that, I encourage everyone to be confident and express themselves by wearing whatever they want.
Who should everyone be taking style cues from right now?
In your opinion, what brands can do no wrong?
Ralph Lauren — it’s classic. It sets the standard when you're curating your personal style. Maison Margiela, because the quality and less-is-more approach to style speaks for itself. Thom Browne, which is tailored prep for those ‘get dressed’ moments. And it’s always fun seeing people put Marni ‘fits together, especially when they incorporate the brand’s sweaters and slippers
What is the best ‘fit of the year so far?
In my opinion, there’s a clear winner: Tyler, the Creator at the Paris Fashion Week Louis Vuitton men’s FW22 show.
How does one keep their style authentic?
Keeping your style authentic is tricky because of technology – we soak up a lot of references from social media. It’s important to re-evaluate your likes and dislikes from time to time, and to consider your body type when shopping.
How does one develop their taste?
Developing your taste comes with experience; you don’t just wake up one day with good taste. It’s important to travel, meet new people, explore the internet, explore stores and breathe fresh air. Do all of these things, and you’ll be well on your way to developing your taste.
What kinds of pieces are you bored of spotting?
Is this a safe space? Lol. Graphic tees, those shorts that the kids like (I’ll avoid naming the brand) and Nike Dunks. It’s all very unoriginal.
What brands are you looking forward to seeing people sport this summer?
Homme Plissé Issey Miyake — Issey Pleats always work in the summer. It’s lightweight, luxe and chic. I feel like Jacquemus is always good for summer, especially on tropical vacations. And finally Casablanca: ‘Casablanca by the caseload,’ Westside Gunn.
Looking at the AW22 shows, what trends are you looking forward to witnessing come fall?
I don’t really follow trends, but I’m excited by the presence of black, denim and baggy pieces in the AW22 collections. I’m excited to see how it all turns out, but, for now, let’s please enjoy the summer.
Any final pieces of advice?
A piece of advice I took from A$AP Rocky’s stylist Matt Henson (@henson) is to get everything tailored, including your hoodies. It’s changed my life.
@thecrediblesource: Summer 2022 Picks
Balenciaga has a big year every year, but this year they’re having an even bigger year than usual. I love the latest Runners – you can pull them off with both sporty and chic looks. A versatile sneaker like this is essential to everyone’s closet.
A Margiela organic tee three-pack is essential for summer. The quality matches the price point, so I’d recommend getting a hold of every colour pack you can to keep you going until the end of summer.
You've got to have a mule in your summer rotation, and what’s better than a pair of Marni calf hair slippers? You can dress them up or down; you can wear them local or on vacation. And the best part is they’re available in a variety of colours.
It's set to be a hot summer which means it’s time to grab a pair of short shorts. You can’t go wrong with this pair by Rick, especially if you pair it with a black tee. Always remember: less is more.
I spend 99% of my time in Birkenstocks and Kapital socks, so I feel like they deserve a shoutout. Affordable and versatile, everybody needs at least one pair.
Buckets; buckets; buckets. What more can I say? This Kapital bucket gets the job done every time. Absolute fire.
A Bottega Veneta cassette shoulder bag works for all of your necessities. There are a fair few colour options, and I vote green because, well, it’s Bottega.
