Hanneli Mustaparta

The photographer, art director and fashion blogger takes to New York's rooftops to show off her best holiday looks

'For the holidays, i like to keep it nice and simple and wear winter white'

'These pieces all reflects my party lookin their own ways. I always like to changes it up'

When the photographer, art director and fashion blogger Hanneli Mustaparta modelled her favourite festive looks for Farfetch, there was one piece in particular that she fell in love with. ‘The Viktor & Rolf dress,’ she explains. ‘It’s simple and sleek, yet it had these interesting details on the sleeves that remind me of the Sixties.’

Hailing from Norway, Hanneli is something of an expert at looking stylish in these coldest of months. So before she headed back to her homeland for the holidays (‘Hopefully I’ll see the Northern Lights while I’m up there,’ she says), we asked for some advice on making this December our best-dressed ever.

What are your winter wardrobe staples?

When the weather gets colder, I pair large, structured sweaters by Stella McCartney or Calvin Klein with my Frame and Acne jeans and high-heeled boots.

What about outfits for the holiday season?

I love dressing up for Christmas and New Year. For Christmas I’m planning on wearing an amazing long white Acne dress with large red flowers speckled in green and gold. For New Year’s Eve I’ll be wearing a white Viktor & Rolf dress – like the one I wore in the shoot – with my white Calvin Klein pony pumps with brushed gold buckles.

Usually I like wearing white, pastel blue, navy and military green, and for the holidays I like to keep it nice and simple by wearing winter white. Since I spend my holidays in Norway where it’s so dark and with few daylight hours, wearing lighter, softer colours feels nice.

Any advice for putting together stylish festive looks?

Yes, it’s all about balance! If you’re wearing a sexy dress, it would be too much if your hair was big and sexy too. To make it more fashion-forward, a better idea is to pair a sexy dress with a simple, sleek ponytail or bun. Alternatively, if you’re wearing a minimalistic dress, it’s all about the accessories.

And tips for looking good in party pictures?

A lot of people have only one facial expression for photos. It’s good to have a few different expressions up your sleeve: it could be a half smile, your body either straight on, or at a slight angle to the camera. Practice at home and see what works best for you. When it comes to make-up, a good foundation is important to even out your skin tone. Also, translucent powder will ensure that you don’t look too shiny!

What are you hoping to find under your Christmas tree this year?

A Leica M6 camera and Delfina Delettrez rings from her new collection.
