Kaitlyn Ham on her personal style, dressing in monochrome and easy ways to modernise minimal basics...
WORDS BY AMELIA BELL
As blogger Kaitlyn Ham well knows, you should never underestimate the power of a minimalist wardrobe. The key, she explains, is in layering textural pieces with your basics, utilising volume and adding statement accessories to transform an otherwise quotidian outfit.
Here’s what else Kaitlyn has to say about her personal style, dressing in monochrome and easy ways to modernise minimal basics...
Kaitlyn, how would you describe your style in 3 words?
‘Minimal, classic and functional.’
How do you go about creating a statement look using pieces from a minimalist wardrobe?
‘Utilise volume, texture, sheen, logos and hardware as ways to add interest to otherwise simple looks – oversized coats or blazers, chunky knits, shiny leather, branded accessories and pops of metal work well to take basics to the next level.’
You love a monochrome outfit, who are your top 3 designers to head to when shopping for that look?
‘My personal favourites are Balenciaga, Ellery and Bassike.’
Can you tell us a bit about the pieces you’ve chosen for your minimalist Farfetch edit?
‘This edit heavily reflects my own minimalist wardrobe, which is based on simple yet edgy staples. Each piece has a unique attitude that elevates it beyond your average basic, so it can easily stand alone as a hero piece or be layered with others without looking overdone.’
What are your top tips for putting together a monochrome wardrobe?
‘A monochrome wardrobe should be classic and timeless, yet still have a boldness to it. So, choosing styles such as [the pieces in my Farfetch edit], which have those unique elements and a subtle edge is essential to achieving this balance and ensuring no look is ever boring.’
How do you keep such a classic colour palette looking modern?
‘Combine minimal basics with key statement accessories to add sleekness and attitude - aim to contrast rather than fully complement. Anchor an ultra-feminine dress with an edgy sneaker or sling a luxury bag over a T-shirt and jeans – the modern approach to monochrome should be light-hearted and offbeat.’
When it comes to minimalist style, what is your favourite investment piece?
‘That’s a tough toss-up between a perfectly tailored boyfriend blazer and a small luxury tote bag for everyday wear. Both will see you through many an outfit dilemma.’
Minimalism and monochrome aside, what’s your best piece of fashion advice?
‘When it comes to building your wardrobe, prioritise fit, function, practicality and quality above all else. Know your measurements, find a great tailor that can adjust fits where necessary. Remember that comfort is key and invest in a solid foundation of well-made staples that will go the distance and maintain their value should you wish to re-sell them in the future.Take inspiration from others but never take anything as gospel – the fashion industry appreciates style that is unique and instinctual. Basically, if it makes you happy: wear it.’
