WORDS BY AMELIA BELL
The world of fine jewellery is evolving. From classic to contemporary, jewellers are adapting to our changing attitudes towards the most precious of accessories. Right now, all eyes are on Paris Couture Week and the High Jewellery presentations that run alongside; a twice yearly unveiling of the fine jewellery collections for the season to come. Our eyes and ears on the ground? Always Judging blogger Courtney Trop, who talks us through the best of AW18’s fine jewellery trends...
What are your highlights from the shows?
I loved how sculptor and jewellery designer David Yurman switched things up this season by showcasing a men’s collection. Featuring layered pendant necklaces and alternative signet rings that can be worn by both men and women, the pieces introduce a new, diverse feel for fine jewellery.
And how was the De Beers show?
It was beautiful! De Beers had four themes throughout the presentation - my personal favourite was the play on cupid and his lover, particularly a single earring reminiscent of a diamond wing. Women are now buying single earrings to mix and match with their other pieces, so it’s great to see such a prestigious brand embracing this new sense of individuality.
What’s the best thing about Couture Week?
It’s normally a little more relaxed than fashion month, so I can actually soak it all up and really enjoy the shows. It’s also pretty amazing seeing couture up close - every piece is a work of art, a true testament to designers skill and craftsmanship.
Tell us about your outfit today...
I’ve chosen a pinstripe suit and stiletto mule, then mixed up the De Beers diamond stack rings and bangles with more bohemian-style rings. I like the juxtaposition between soft fine jewellery pieces and a boyish suit.
What’s your top styling trick when it comes to wearing fine jewellery?
I’m experimenting more and more; I prefer masculine, chunky rings, plus stacked hoops worn all the way up one ear, (and nothing on the other). Since my style is typically quite rough around the edges, layering fine jewellery is a great way to balance it out.
What are the key trends in jewellery for AW18?
Medallions, shells and signets are the top trends to look out for in fine jewellery right now.
What’s on your Farfetch wishlist and why?
Anything from Chanel’s vintage jewellery range. I buy a ton of vintage pieces and they always seem more special, more unique - I feel like they hold special energy, too.
Finally, where are your three favourite spots in Paris?
Rodin Museum, Hotel Costes and Cafe Constant - I eat here every single time I’m in Paris, the bread is insanely good!
