WORDS BY JOSEPH FURNESS
Fashion's latest unassuming muse? The performance runner. We’re talking the type of dedicated sprinter who has all of the equipment: the sweat-wicking tee, the stretch tights, the perforated headgear and the function–first running sneakers. The kind to be well acquainted with On Running – a Swiss brand that offers super tasteful takes on all of the above and more.
Ever since 2010, On Running (or, just ‘On’) has been providing devoted dashers with garments and accessories crafted with leading-edge components that further the wearer’s physical abilities. For example, On incorporates its very own CloudTec – an adaptive sole technology that activates during landings, reacts to your unique movements, and, as the name suggests, offers cloud-like comfort – into the lion’s share of its footwear collection. And thanks to the prevailing performance apparel trend, a mode bolstered by the recent LOEWE x On collaboration, tastemakers are finally discovering the brilliance of the European label and the functionality of its offerings.
Are you a fitness or fashion enthusiast looking to learn a little more about On Running? Keep reading to discover the answers to all of the most popular questions surrounding the brand, from ‘Who founded On Running?’ to ‘What are the best On Running sneakers?’.
Who founded On Running?
On was founded by Olivier Bernhard (a three-time world duathlon champion and multiple Ironman winner) and his friends David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti in 2010. Their primary goal was, and still is, to revolutionize the sensation of running.
When was On Running established?
On was established in Zürich, Switzerland when Olivier Bernhard’s friend, a Swiss engineer who worked for public research university ETH Zürich, made a prototype shoe using chopped-up pieces of his garden hose. This prototype led to Bernhard founding the company and creating CloudTec, On’s patented running shoe technology that's as visually appealing as it is functional.
Where is On Running based?
The On Running headquarters is located in Zürich, the city where the brand was founded. However, On has offices in four other countries across the globe – in the USA, Australia, Japan and Brazil.
What is CloudTec?
CloudTec is On Running’s patented running shoe technology that has been crucial to the brand since its inception. The highly adaptive sole doubles as a cushioning system that activates during landings to produce explosive take-offs. As a result, the technology reduces muscle fatigue and lowers heart rates.
Where can you buy On Running?
A wide selection of On Running products are available at FARFETCH, from performance running t-shirts to CloudTec-soled sneakers.
What is the best On Running sneaker?
Over the last 12 years, the On team has been working hard to create different sneaker silhouettes that provide unique on-foot experiences. Below, we list the most popular On sneaker silhouettes, including the classic Cloud and the recently released Cloudmonster.
The On Cloud is the brand’s best-seller. Designed for all-day wear, the classic kick is just as suitable for city dwellers as it is for running club members.
To us, it’s not the fact that the Cloud 5 is more comfortable than the OG Cloud that makes it superior, it’s because it’s made with 44% recycled materials, as opposed to 5%.
The Cloudmonster – a monster truck of a trainer – is the newest addition to On’s Cloud family. Sure, it was created for long-distance road runners, but the shoe is super popular with trend arbiters by reason of its modish oversized design.
Whether you’re a road runner or a treadmill jogger, the Cloudswift is a Helion superfoam-supported running sneaker that’s sure to change the way you work out. It may be shockingly lightweight, but the shock-absorbing design will ensure your feet are perennially protected.
The Cloudultra is an all-rounder. It’s ultra-comfortable thanks to two layers of CloudTec and Helion superfoam; durable because it’s reinforced with lightweight TPU; and suitable for a number of activities, including hiking, trail walking and cross-country running.
Soft, supportive and highly reactive (no, we're not talking about ourselves), the Cloudnova is an everyday shoe that feels just as good as it looks. Grab a pair for your work commutes, evening outings, and weekend strolls.
The Cloud High Edge Defy is a super cosy kick designed for those long days spent on your feet. Because of its high-top design, the sneaker is suitable for those who reside in colder countries.
