How to pack for a spa weekend

Share

While spending a long weekend incubating in a Jacuzzi may epitomise relaxation, figuring out how to pack for a spa weekend can spark sartorial stress. After all, an effortlessly elegant uniform is essential for in between all those hot-stone massages and salt rubs.

Hauling large bags around is not part of the tranquil spa idyll, but with a little planning, whittling down your outfit choices can be as painless – and as rewarding – as a delicately administered facial.

Slip in some swimwear

As most spas offer full use of the pool facilities, a bikini is an obvious necessity. For a weekend break in warmer climes, the multihued crochet two-pieces in Tommy Hilfiger’s SS16 collection are appealingly bright while retaining the label’s preppy tendencies. Along a similar vein, Dsquared2 infused exotic flamboyancy into its swimwear in the same season, with white go-faster stripes producing a sporty edge.

For those who prefer a feminine aesthetic, labels such as Brigitte offer bikinis and mailots with a softly sensual spin. The brand’s ‘50s-style pastel bathing suits come complete with playful cut outs and delicate finishes, and are ideal for an indulgent poolside look.

Cover up with a kaftan

Float from sauna to treatment room in a kaftan. Dolce & Gabbana's SS16 collection features simple white smocks in loose-fitting shapes, emblazoned with bold botanical-inspired prints. Floral items are fitting as the basis for spa day outfit ideas, forming subconscious connections with nature and deepening the sense of well-being and mindfulness cultivated by a soothing weekend away.

If kaftans forge too close an association with beach holidays, an upscale kimono is an inspired alternative. Lingerie purveyor Fleur du Mal has updated the traditional Japanese wrap-over design, rejecting Oriental-inspired prints and tones in favour of an understated monochrome and nude palette.

Keep it simple in sportswear

When deciding how to pack for a spa weekend, switch the complementary towelling dressing gowns for comfortable sports-luxe clothing.

Planning to make the most of the exercise classes at your spa break? Adidas by Stella McCartney offered practical gym gear with a directional twist for SS16. Palm-tree prints and flattering stripes combined with breathable, functional fabrics to create high-performance sportswear that’s as effective as it is fashion forward.

For athleisure that's far too appealing to actually work out it in, make a run for Chloé. Languid, tomboyish sweatpants were paired with ultra-feminine tops in the laid-back label’s SS16 collection, allowing outfits to transition from daytime to dignified dining ensemble with ease.

Streamline your shoe choices

A suitcase brimming with footwear options is less necessary when packing for a spa break than, say, a multi-destination cruise, but it’s still advisable to take at least two pairs of shoes: flip-flops and trainers. Tuck sandals into your case for the evening, too, particularly if you plan to dine in the on-site restaurant. An ornate pair is perfect for offsetting a freshly finished pedicure.

Try Marni’s chunky bejewelled wonders from its SS16 collection, or opt for Dolce & Gabbana’s gorgeously gaudy pairs featuring outsize gemstones. Teamed with a streamlined maxi dress, they’ll create a refined but relaxed look for the evening.

For flip-flops to wear with everything from a bikini to a tracksuit, look to the rainbow-striped foam flatforms from SS16 Saint Laurent. Alternatively, French label Figue embraced pom-pom adornments, one of the same season’s most playful trends, for its surprisingly understated SS16 flats.

Easy-wear sliders are also a versatile option to consider when deciding how to pack for a spa break. Designs by Simone Rocha are decorated with glass-bead daisies and will add a touch of daintiness to an understated kaftan.

Pack pyjamas as evening attire

As beauty sleep goes hand in hand with a rejuvenating spa break, a pair of sleek PJs is essential – for lounging as well as for naps.

Fortunately, pyjamas that double up as day and evening wear were one of AW16’s most prominent trends. Alberta Ferretti teamed understated red-trimmed sets with chandelier earrings and heavily embroidered pumps for a low-key evening look with a plush twist. Meanwhile, Alexander Wang showcased classic silk pyjamas energised for nighttime with studded accessories and statement handbags.

Prefer to save your PJs for bed? Opt for a lingerie-style Givenchy slip dress when choosing how to pack for a spa break. The silky materials and loose-fitting silhouettes means they’re practically made for tugging on over newly softened skin.
