Depilling, reshaping, antimothing: educate yourself with our foolproof methods and you’ll never suffer the heartache of a ruined sweater again
WORDS BY ALEXANDRA RHODES
The one redeeming thing about winter? Cashmere, obviously! Tragically, these cosy woollens can all too often come to a sticky demise if you don’t look after them properly. So since January is depressing enough, here’s how to care for your cashmere in 6 easy steps…
1. Skip the dry cleaners. When it comes to maintaining the quality of your cashmere, it’s all about handwashing.
2. If you’re not #blessed with a hand-wash function on your machine, fill your basin with cool water, add a mild detergent and soak for at least 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
3. Refrain from wringing out your knitwear, however tempting – it will distort the fabric. Instead, wrap woollens in a towel and gently squeeze. Then lie flat on a clean towel to air dry.
4. A word of warning: moths love your cashmere as much as you do. Place freshly laundered clothes into a zip-lock bag and place in the freezer for 48 hours. Seriously. This kills the larvae and will ensure your knits remain moth egg – and hole – free.
5. Do not hang cashmere as it will affect the shape of your garment. Instead, perfect the art of the store-like fold to prevent stretching.
6. No matter how good the quality of your cashmere, you might have to deal with some pilling. Keep a comb or electric depiller on hand to deal with bobbles. But remember, exercise caution!
