If the new-season runways taught us one thing about footwear, it’s that loafers are well and truly back. From Gucci to Alexander McQueen and beyond, every designer offered their high-fashion take on the traditional slip-on loafer silhouette, including big, chunky styles and interesting heeled options.
‘Loafers are a timeless wardrobe staple we see reinvented each season,’ notes Sophie George, FARFETCH’s junior fashion editor. Chunky, almost platform soles have been trending recently, exemplified by the coveted Prada Monolith’s. In contrast, more slimline, classic designs have remained popular, seen at brands such as Church’s and Saint Laurent. Dress down this more formal style with vintage sportswear or denim. For something more eye-catching, opt for a sharp, square-toe style like Martine Rose’s. The angular design in black leather or snake-effect has been her signature shape for many seasons now.’

The updated classic
‘When you think of iconic loafers, you think of Gucci. And as one of the house’s most iconic designs, it’s no wonder the loafer continues to be reimagined by the brand each season. This particular style combines rich, shiny leather and beige canvas printed with the brand’s signature GG monogram motif, making it a real updated classic. Plus, it’s finished with a playful tassel and a rubber tipped heel. Take your regular size and choose from the black or brown. Style them with a classic Gucci suit or a vintage sweatshirt and washed-out denim for a dressed-down look.’
The statement style
‘These inventive Margiela loafers incorporate numerous iconic design features. The Tabi toe, a signature of the house since the 80s and one of fashion’s most expressive styles, is an instantly recognizable detail for those in the know. These cult loafers feature the brand’s signature white stitching to the back of the shoe, while the clever heel design showcases a soft leather back that can be worn up or down to transition from an enclosed shoe to a slip-on. What to style these with? Just about everything, from casual denim and cropped tailored trousers to smart two-piece suits — this style transcends casual and formal occasions beautifully. If you opt for the lace-up version, they’re available on FARFETCH in a wide range of colorways, from white and tan to blue and yellow. We recommend taking your regular size for the Tabi as they come up true to size.’
The new color codes
‘If you prefer to add a pop of color to your looks, and for a modern twist on the trend, consider adding Alexander McQueen’s ridged swirl-design loafers to your year-round wardrobe. A paint-inspired effect dark blue appears worn off over time to reveal buffed black leather, something that is truly unique when it comes to footwear. To nod to the tradition of placing a penny in your loafer, a coin featuring the brand’s crest is slipped within the penny bar strap for a signature twist on a historical reference. This style fits perfectly, so no need to size up or down. Style them with slouchy tailored trousers that drape over the shoe to nod to the British brand’s house codes. They also come in smooth black leather and with eye-catching crystal embellishments.’
The chunky silhouette
‘Chunky loafers are not a new trend for fall, we’ve seen them in the spotlight season after season — but now they’re bigger, bolder and more fun. Marni's experimental approach is expressed here through playful design details and proportion play. The square toe and platform sole adds a contemporary update to the classic slip-on silhouette, appealing to the fashion lover with offbeat style tendencies. This oversized, exaggerated shape is a signature for the house, and with the addition of the silver hoop pierced through the penny bar, they become even more interesting. Pair with baggy chinos and colorful knitwear for an ode to Marni’s exuberant spirit. If white isn’t your color of choice, opt for the all-black version, but order them in your usual size as they fit just right.’
The heeled one
‘Parisian powerhouse Saint Laurent knows how to nail the classics and give them a notable twist. Case in point: the Solferino 30 loafers. As seen on Saint Laurent’s new-season runways, this almond-toe pair is crafted from 100% leather — upper, lining and sole — and sits on a small 30mm stacked heel. Sleek and super-comfy, these modernized loafers are finished with a gold horsebit to the vamp, so they’re perfect for more formal occasions. Wear with your favorite suit when it’s time to impress, and for those who are in-between sizes, opt for half a size up.’
