The Ultimate Air Jordan 3 Sizing, Fit and Styling Guide

Share

Over the past few years, the Air Jordan 3 has been overlooked and overshadowed by the likes of the Air Jordan 1 and the Air Jordan 4. You could say it’s been the Woody of Jordan’s trainer box.

But, recently, the Jumpman has been teasing a momentous comeback, quietly dropping AJ3 gems for the hardcore sneakerheads – including a retro release of 2007’s uber-popular ‘Cool Grey’ colourway and an A Ma Maniére take on the silhouette. Accordingly, we’re preparing for a new wave of hype by bringing you an ultimate guide to the Air Jordan 3.

Below, four Jordan collectors from across the globe discuss their fondness for the Air Jordan 3, sharing their tips to consider when purchasing the ’88 silhouette. Open your notes app, or go and grab a pen and paper, and prepare to learn everything about Air Jordan 3 sizing, fit and styling.

In my opinion, the Air Jordan 3 is one of the best trainers ever made. It may have its origins in basketball, but it makes a neat lifestyle trainer, especially to those who are part of streetwear subcultures.

Here, I’m wearing the Fragment Design x Air Jordan 3, fashioned by Hiroshi Fujiwara. The collaborative release offers a simplistic take on the Jordan silhouette that’s easy to mix and match with most pieces in your wardrobe.

Styling: The Fragment Design x Air Jordan 3 is a trainer I throw on without overthinking because it works well with all of my styles. Today, I’m wearing my Air Jordan 3s with a minimalistic outfit consisting of an oversized T-shirt, a helmet bag and a pair of dark skinny jeans.

Sizing and fit: Air Jordan 3s fit tight; therefore, I usually opt for a half size up to give my toes more room. To be specific, my true size is a US 8 and I’m wearing a US 8.5.

Comfort: I would say that the Air Jordan 3 is a very comfortable shoe and therefore great for long days spent on your feet. I love that the trainer features a thick tongue and is padded generously.

Care: I usually wash the outsole of my Air Jordan 3s once a week and wipe the upper with microfibre cloths; I rarely wash the upper unless they’re dramatically stained. Furthermore, I spray water repellent protective care products on the shoes and safely display them on my trainer shelf when I’m not wearing them.

When I think of iconic trainer silhouettes, one of the first that comes to mind is the Air Jordan 3. The basketball silhouette was contemporaneous when Michael Jordan won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1988.

Here, I’m wearing the 2021 release of 2007’s Air Jordan 3 ‘Cool Grey’. I love to customise my trainers and I’ve decided to give this pair a vintage makeover, mainly by adding yellow tones. Now, I love the way they look.

Styling: I can honestly wear my Air Jordan 3s all day, every day as they work with pretty much anything. I enjoy wearing mine with Nike and Supreme tops and hoodies paired with either jeans or cropped cargos. Oh, and I also think they look best with long tube socks.

Sizing and fit: I would say Air Jordan 3s fit true to size. However, if you have wide feet, I would recommend sizing up.

Comfort: The Air Jordan 3 is one of the most comfortable silhouettes in the Air Jordan line, thanks to the cushioning around the ankles and the bouncy Air unit. You definitely won’t have an issue wearing them all day.

Care: To be quite honest, I rotate through multiple Jordans so that none of them get too dirty. Having said that, shoes are more appealing to me when they oxidize, so I plan to let them age gracefully. If they get dusty, I clean them with Crep Protect shoe cleaner and scrub them with a soft brush.

The Air Jordan 3 – designed by trainer legend Tinker Hatfield – was once considered the perfect basketball shoe. It was the first Jordan to incorporate performance-enhancing materials and the first to replace the wing logo with the iconic Jumpman motif.

Here, I’m wearing the Air Jordan 3 ‘Black Cement’ colourway, which is one of my top three Air Jordan 3s in my collection. My favourite design features are the elephant print materials, tumbled black leather and the contrasting red accents.

Styling: Air Jordan 3s are super easy to style and work with formal and casual looks – for this reason, there’s always an Air Jordan 3 in my rotation. When styling my AJ3 ‘Black Cements’, I like to keep my fits simple and laidback. Today, for example, I’ve styled them with an oversized black tee, joggers, a Nike vest (to add a layer to my fit) and a few pieces of jewellery.

Sizing and fit: The Jordan 3 might be bulky but it’s also narrow. Typically, I’m a UK 4 but I tend to opt for a UK 5 when purchasing AJ3. Personally, I would definitely recommend sizing up.

Comfort: Air Jordan 3s are so comfortable! I’d go so far as to say that they’re the comfiest Jordan silhouette. I’ve worn them on days when I’ve had to walk all day and I’ve had no problems dealing with discomfort – I think it’s mainly down to the soft materials and cushioning.

Care: I try to preserve my Air Jordan 3s as best as I can. I regularly use Crep Protect wipes and cleaning solution on all of my trainers. I also store each of my trainers in their original box.

The Air Jordan 3 will forever hold a special place in my heart as it was the first Jordan silhouette I purchased with my own money. In case you’re wondering, it was the Air Jordan 3 Retro ‘Flip’.

To this day, the Air Jordan 3 is still a staple in my trainer collection – especially the AJ3 SE Unite ‘Fire Red’ colourway released around the time of the 2020 NBA All-Star Game. They’re practically a flipped version of the ‘Black Cements’!

Styling: The Jordan 3 is a great lifestyle trainer that pairs well with just about every trouser style. It’s one of a handful of Jordan silhouettes that I’d recommend wearing with jeans – I think that’s got something to do with its shape and use of materials (FYI, it’s primarily constructed in leather). My style is pretty neutral, so I like to wear colourful trainers.

Sizing and fit: For as long as I can remember, the Air Jordan 3 has fit true to size. I’m a size US 9.5, and I have an average foot shape that leans to the narrow side, and I can confidently opt for my true size when ordering an Air Jordan 3.

Comfort: It’s no surprise that the Air Jordan 3 isn’t the comfiest trainer on the market – it was released back in 1988, after all! However, it’s still comfortable enough to wear all day.

Care: For a trainer like the Air Jordan 3 that features leather panelling on its uppers, I personally steer away from protective sprays. If there are any stains on the upper or midsole, I usually spot treat them. Personally, I like the leather on my trainers to age naturally.
