Talking Christmas with Raff Law

WORDS BY JOSEPH FURNESS

All-around cool kid Rafferty Law is the embodiment of contemporary London. His vibe is fresh, but never too forced, laidback but never lazy, and most importantly, adaptable — he looks as comfortable in a double-breasted suit as he does lounging in his Adidas tracksuit.

“He sounds great”, I hear you say, “but what’s he got to do with Christmas?”. Well, he’s a prime example of a millennial metropolitan: notoriously, the hardest demographic to buy gifts for. Understanding the Instagram-addicted, avocado-crazy generation takes skill and for many, just beginning to think about what to get said individuals can lead to a dangerous state of present-buying anxiety (their idea of what makes a ‘great gift’ is usually far from obvious).

So we did a little experiment to explore the festive thought processes of the 22-year old city boy; a sort-of structured interview to help you decode the mind of the one of the most in-the-know Gen-Zs around. You’re welcome.

What does Christmas day look like in the Law household and what is the appropriate attire for the day’s events?

Christmas day at my house is always family oriented. We have such a big family so it usually feels like we’ve packed in four Christmases in one day! My day always starts in comfy tracksuits and then the suit comes out for Christmas lunch.

2018 has been a big year for accessories. What is the most up-to-the-minute accessory to gift this Christmas?

I’ve never been someone who’s very good at staying up to date with the latest trends, I tend to stick to what I like and go from there. However, I personally feel a piece of gold jewellery or even a pair of headphones are always sure winners!

In your opinion, who is the most stylish Christmas film character ever and why?

The most stylish Christmas film character for me would have to be James Stewart in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ — that’s one stylish dude.

What is the one brand that you’d be happy to receive anything from this Christmas and why?

I definitely would have to go with Gucci: the colours the quality and the cuts do it for me. To be honest, there aren’t many pieces by the brand I wouldn’t wear.

Who's the hardest person to buy gifts for, and why?

Without a doubt, it’s my sister Iris; she seems to have everything she needs and she can also be very particular about what she likes. There’s been a few time when I thought I had smashed it out of the park with her present but then I realise I haven’t seen it for years. Oh well...there’s always this year.

With the festive period comes party season. What formal wear trends are you feeling this winter?

For me, winter is my favourite time of year to dress up, especially when it’s cold enough to wear a suit with a trench coat over the top. I’m a big fan of layering up, so in the winter I mismatch my big coats, suits, suit trousers and polo shirts together. I believe you’ve always got to look the part, and also always have a coat on you in case the misses gets cold!

What makes a good gift?

I believe the thought process behind a gift is what makes it the best. The kittens I mentioned were a birthday surprise from my girlfriend and it was a great gift because its something she really thought about and something we share a connection over. A gift with personal or sentimental value always goes a long way.

And finally, what are your three favourite non-fashion things right now?

Three of my favourite things right now are my Fender Jazzmaster, my Casper mattress and my new kittens. Nothing beats kittens.

Never miss a thing
