Frieze London is here, the art world’s version of Fashion Week. If you’re planning on joining the most buzzworthy artists and dealers of the moment in Regent’s Park this weekend, you might want to get yourself in the creative mood. Luckily, this season’s collections have more than their fair share of artistic references, be it Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli doing a painterly collaboration with the Memphis group or Stella McCartney and her George Stubbs prints...
Stella McCartney and George Stubbs
A keen equestrian herself, McCartney prints George Stubbs’s 1770 painting, A Horse Frightened by a Lion directly onto a series of key pieces in her AW17 collection, reflecting the designer’s wider preoccupation with British heritage.

Prada and Robert E. McGinnis
Who’d have thought a 91-year-old illustrator was behind Prada’s latest collection? This season Miuccia’s prints – featuring femme fatales and pinups – come via illustrator Robert E. McGinnis, whose work graced a series of pulp fiction book covers and film posters (including Breakfast At Tiffany’s) back in the Sixties.

Proenza Schouler and Jackson Pollock
Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez haven’t explicitly referenced the work of Jackson Pollock for their AW17 collection, but it definitely looks as if the abstract expressionist’s infamous paint brush had been let loose on their paint-splattered tops and scribble-print separates.

Valentino and the Memphis group
Artists Nathalie du Pasquier and George Sowden are the collaborators responsible for Valentino’s surreal candy-coloured prints this season (alongside the label’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli of course). The pair are also the founding members of Memphis, a subversive Milanese art group which steered a postmodern art and architectural movement in the late 20th century.

Browns and Jean-Michel Basquiat
If you’ve not had a chance to visit the UK’s first major exhibition of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s works (at London’s Barbican), don’t worry - you can still, quite literally, get the T-shirt.
