Womenswear Colour Trends of 2019

Share

WORDS BY JOSEPH FURNESS

Remember when Rihanna dyed her hair red after going through her dark-times Rated R era, released ‘Only Girl in the World’ (tune) and all of a sudden it felt like all balance was restored to the universe? Well, that’s exemplary of the power that colour can have.

Colours communicate our moods, personalities and our current state of mind. So what colour will you be wearing in 2019, and most importantly, why?

Fashion Colour Trend of 2019:

Chocolate Brown

“Chocolate brown is not always the most commercial colour, but for SS19 it suddenly felt relevant, chic and at last wearable: and a case in point was the opening look of the Prada show. When Miuccia speaks, everyone listens, and we predict the brown satin short from look 1 will be the standout piece of the season. Expect to see them everywhere!”

- Jennifer Bishop

Who’s doing chocolate brown in 2019?

Versace, Prada, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford

What does chocolate brown say about a woman?

A woman who can pull-off chocolate brown KNOWS fashion. She isn’t afraid of looking too 70’s in the colour because she knows what works in 2019. She comes pre-built with a fashion conscience that instantly tells her what is hot or not — one we like to imagine looks like a cross between Jiminy Cricket and Anna Wintour.

What does chocolate brown say about the world rn?

It says that we’re still obsessed with making the extremely unfashionable, fashionable. Chunky sneakers, cardigans and now chocolate browns; we like experimenting with perceptions. What’s next? (We won’t hazard a guess because we will probably be back-tracking by the end of the year.)

Chocolate brown 2019 must-haves

Chocolate brown cycling shorts:

A trend that began in 2018 but is set to stick around; cycling shorts appear refreshingly modern in milk chocolate hues. Pair with other creamy colours and you’ll have a simple but effective day-time ensemble (a look that will have your future grandkids saying “Grandma was so effortlessly cool back in the day”).

Chocolate brown leather jacket

We don’t really care whether you opt for or an SS19 Fendi rain jacket or a Max Mara overcoat; we just think your on-trend leather overlayer for the colder months should come in the hottest hue of the year.

Chocolate brown nylon anything

This one goes out to Prada. In Muicca’s first look for SS19, she combined a pair of nylon utility shorts with a nylon black top and we were shook by how such a simple combo could look so cutting-edge. If this isn’t your summer ‘19 source of inspiration, you’re doing it wrong.

Pairs well with…

Beige, white, cream, khaki, charcoal.

Fashion Colour Trend of 2019:

Marigold

“Yellow came down the runway in a plethora of shades this season, from acid bright to more earthy tones. Alexandre Vauthier firmly established Marigold as part of his SS19 eveningwear collection, from satin mini dresses to suits that appeared like liquid gold.”

- Sophie Perkins

Browns Boutique Assistant Buyer

Who’s doing marigold in 2019?

Marc Jacobs, Ganni, Givenchy, Gucci

What does marigold say about a woman?

The marigold wearing woman is quietly confident. She’s not afraid of adding colour to her wardrobe as she always finds a way to keep it refined. She tells others that the secret to her style is to never overcomplicate.

What does marigold say about the world rn?

After a dark #MeToo era, fashion is encouraging women to glow once more. Combine the shade with some Fenty Beauty shimmering body spray and you'll be shining brighter than a diamond.

Marigold 2019 must-haves

Marigold satin dress

If Marigold is your colour, then buy it in satin. It’ll make you look like a million bucks, we promise.

Marigold raincoat

As long as there’s no Pennywise roaming your town, a Marigold raincoat is sure to brighten up your every day (quite literally).

Marigold pleated dress

This one goes out to Claire Waight Keller at Givenchy. The asymmetrical pleated SS19 dress of marigold and white is perhaps her most exciting creation since that Meghan Markle dress.

Pairs well with…

Burnt orange, black, white, silver, brown.

Fashion Colour Trend of 2019:

 Lime Green

“The runways were full of looks that either had subtle pops of lime green or tie-dye in this shade or fantastic head to toe ensembles. So it is very likely that this colour will be the 2019 summer staple”

- Costanza Lombardi

Browns Boutique Buyer

Who’s doing lime green in 2019?

Off-White, Prada, Balenciaga, Jeremy Scott, Versace

What does lime green say about a woman?

When Drake sang “I’m here for a good time not a long time”, we felt that, and so did the unapologetic lime-green wearing women of the world. Simply put: they’re shepherds, not sheep.

What does lime green say about the world rn?

It says that we should all lighten up and live a little. Life’s too short for everyday funeral-vibes attire; wear a bit of lime green and spice up your life.

Lime green 2019 must-haves

Lime green minidress

Only Versace could persuade us that a lime green leather minidress was one of the most appealing pieces to have in 2019. Worn by non-other than Bella Hadid on the SS19 catwalk; Donatella has officially designed next year’s sexiest party look.

Lime green skirt

Prada just made a lime green skirt look sensible and we’re totally down for it. Why not use the hue to bring some personality to your business attire.

Lime green pantsuit

It’s no secret that we love a good co-ord set, they define this decade’s style. And what better way to finish to finish off the 2010’s than with an all-eyes-on-you lime green pantsuit.

Pairs well with
Black, white, pink, grey.

Fashion Colour Trend of 2019:

 Pink

Marine Serre and many other designers worked their magic on this colour and transformed it into the perfect colour choice of statement-making looks that are sophisticated and not anymore just girly”

Costanza Lombardi  -

Browns Boutique Buyer

Who’s doing pink in 2019?

Marine Serre, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Balenciaga, Gucci, Valentino, Jacquemus

What does pink say about a woman?

That she likes to look pretty and she’s proud of it. She’s out here showing us that you can adopt the most stereotypically girly colour and still have your own voice - who knew! This year, post-irony rules.

What does pink say about the world rn?

That equality doesn’t mean that woman shouldn’t be able to conform to stereotypes in a conscious way. So if Barbie is your idea of  ‘style goals’ then 2019 (and Farfetch) is encouraging you to rock it.

Pink 2019 must-haves

Pink blazer dress

Like we said, wearing pink in 2019 is kinda post-ironic. Why not take that to a new level, completely mash people’s minds by merging the most masculine silhouette with the most feminine colour by wearing a pink blazer dress. (Take notes from Balenciaga SS19.)

Pink jacket

A bright pink jacket takes us back to the late 90s/early 00s, aka the Paris Hilton era. So get watching ‘The Simple Life’ and ‘Legally Blonde’ for some style inspiration.

Pink trousers

Gucci's Alessandro Michele reckons you should buy pink trousers and then clash them with other vibrant hues. As much as we love a vibrant look, we quite like the idea of pairing them with black or white (but maybe we’re just boring).

Pairs well with…

White, purple, neutrals, red, orange.

Fashion Colour Trend of 2019:

Beige

“Tisci’s debut collection at Burberry was a landscape of beige hues, naturally complementing the classic check (now reiterated as a stripe), the trench was the colour of the collection. At Fendi the logo print is our key place to commercialise this trend, the F logo continues to reincarnated itself on every most wanted shape of the season! This trend is not going anywhere!”

- Jennifer Bishop

Browns Boutique Buyer

Who’s doing beige in 2019?

Burberry, Dior, Fendi, Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Versace

What does beige say about a woman?

Beige is the colour of a woman with timeless style. Her get-ups are always faultless, effortless and ideal for any occasion. She’s probably not new to the colour, but she’s certainly over the moon that it’s back on trend.

What does beige say about the world rn?

It says that with so much chaos on the world right now (Trump, Brexit and the threat of war constantly in the news), we should at least keep the colour of our clothes calm. And with so much focus on beauty trends, sneakers and classic accessories, it’s nice to know that the major fashion houses are encouraging us to stay sleek and simple. Even Versace has gone tonal.

Beige 2019 must-haves

Beige trench coat

Go on, say it; “A beige Burberry trench coat, how groundbreaking”. But listen up for a second. A beige trench coat is suddenly the best investment of the year. Burberry — one of the hottest brands in the world right now because of Riccardo Tisci’s takeover — has reinvented the classic piece with all sorts of modern quirks, breathing new life into the timeless silhouette. There’s even one embellished with pearls and feathers.

Beige cargo pants

We’ve spoken about the unstoppable duo that is Donatella and Bella, and now this one’s a shoutout to Karl and Gigi. Just when you thought Fendi was done re-inventing 90’s trends, Gigi strutted down the SS19 catwalk looking all Lara Croft in a pair of beige cargo pants finished with a brown utility belt. How a look so simple can look so fresh is actually beyond us, proof that Lagerfeld is in-fact a sartorial sorcerer.

Pairs well with…

Brown, cream, khaki, neutrals.

Fashion Colour Trend of 2019:

 White

“White was anything but basic for SS19 and what collections lacked in colour, they made up for in texture and fabrication. Balmain’s show is the perfect example here; a white painterly crackle motif permeated all aspects of the collection, from leather pieces to mini dresses and knitwear.”

- Sophie Perkins

Browns Boutique Assistant Buyer

Who’s doing white in 2019?

Dior, Off-White, Burberry, Fendi, Victoria Beckham, Chanel, Hermes, Valentino, Jacquemus

What does white say about a woman?

Symbolic of purity, white is the colour worn by a woman who is rarely disliked. Pure but still loves to party, infectiously enthusiastic but still sophisticated; she allows herself to wear the prone-to-stain colour because she’s the self-proclaimed princess of her own home, and a princess is never clumsy.

What does white say about the world rn?

That when there are problems aplenty (as we’ve previously discussed), all we want to do is revert to our childhood. There’s something about a white dress that automatically restores one’s innocence — temporarily of course.

White 2019 must-haves

White heels

On paper, they totally wouldn’t be our type; but guess who's here to challenge our view on white heels — Virgil (of course). As part of his Off-White SS19 collection, Virgil recruited the likes of Kaia Gerber, Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner to flaunt a pair of his zip tie white heels. How he persuades us to come out of our comfort zone, we’ll never know.

White overcoat

Somehow, a white overcoat seems like a new idea. But that’s what Victoria Beckham does, switches up the ordinary to make it look brand-new (what a trickster). Perfect for winter, spring, summer and/or fall; a snow white coat is that item missing from your wardrobe that you probably didn’t realise you needed until now.

White cropped shirt

Three words, Chanel did it. If this isn’t proof that the French brand can make anything look high-class, then we don’t know what is. It’s also more evidence towards our Karl Lagerfeld is a sartorial sorcerer theory (see beige for Source A).

Pairs well with...

White, brown, green, pink. Tbh, practically every colour.
