5 PUFFER JACKETS TO GET DOWN WITH

Share

Blow up your outerwear game with this season's warmest jacket...

WORDS BY RYAN THOMPSON

The down jacket was invented out of necessity, after one Eddie Bauer nearly lost his life on a fishing trip in 1936. There are no records of Eddie’s piscine haul that day but we do know that he caught one hell of a cold. But it wasn’t until the Eighties that Milanese subcultural movement Paninaro appropriated the piece as their own and it really took off. The Paninari leaned on an Americana influence, juxtaposing classic workwear with the colourful jackets of brands such as Moncler, Fiorucci and Armani. These days the puffer is compatible with every look, from suiting to streetwear, and these are our current favourite styles to get down with...

The stand-up collar

The classic puffer features a stand-up collar to protect your neck from the elements. It’s a simple-to-wear style that’s best with casual workwear such as jeans, a tee and hiking boots, but you can easily elevate the look by swapping out the tee for a fine-gauge sweater.

The high-gloss finish

This is really an homage to the bright colours originally worn by the Paninari. The shine offers you a bit more flexibility with smarter attire, particularly if you opt for black. And by mixing up fabrics in your other clothes, you can easily achieve a contrast-rich, textural look.

The padded bomber

With it’s collegiate detailing, iconic collar shape and contrast cuffs, we guarantee the padded bomber will become your go-to casual jacket this winter. A flattering cut, an easy-to-wear style, an homage to Americana and toasty to boot. What’s not to like?

The fur-trimmed hood

In a nod to the fur-lined hoods of the traditional parka jacket, these down styles are bred for the deep freeze but make for great urban hero pieces to be dressed up with tapered jeans and Chelsea boots, or dressed down with sportswear and hi-tops.

The tailored style

Recently the likes of Brunello Cucinelli have been styling out down gilets worn beneath suit jackets, turning the usual layering ideas right on their head. In colder climes though, the puffer is a better bet, working seamlessly with suit trousers and formal shoes in the city.
