Tommy Lei of My Belonging teaches us how to pull off the Moncler puffer, Hong Kong style...
WORDS BY ALEXANDRA RHODES
Hong Kong Fashion Week has just kicked off and our man on the ground, Hong Kong-raised, LA-based blogger, Tommy Lei of MY BELONGING, is spotting the trends that matter. So what are HK’s most stylish residents donning this winter? Moncler puffer jackets and vests – and no one is wearing them better than the man himself. Scroll down for his tips below…
So your recent travels have shown Moncler are having a bit of a moment in Hong Kong right now?
‘Almost every stylish individual I encountered [there] was wearing a Moncler puffer jacket or vest. There’s also a definite affinity towards Japanese brands, like Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake.’
What are your tips for styling a puffer jacket?
‘My number one piece of advice would be to simplify the styling. Don’t try to compete with it. Complement it with staples.’
How do you avoid it looking too casual?
‘The key is to keep the fit and proportions right. A Moncler puffer jacket adds just the right amount of volume to my outfits; I tend to keep everything else contoured to my body. Elevate it with a pair of patent leather boots and avoid gym sneakers where possible.’
How do you care for your Moncler jacket?
‘For light stains, I use a clean kitchen sponge and mild citrus detergent. Squeeze the sponge a couple of times until foamy, but so there’s no water dripping out. Rub over the affected spot until the fabric is wet, then rinse the sponge and remove the detergent. If all else fails, take it to your preferred dry cleaner and have them clean the jacket under a gentle cycle that is lacquered-nylon-friendly.’
Share some great Hong Kong shopping tips...
‘The best part about shopping in Hong Kong is being able to customize your own beautifully-tailored, 3-piece suit or cheongsam. Just make sure you’re in town for at least 3 or more days to ensure ample time for the best possible fittings.’
What’s on your Farfetch wish list?
‘I currently have about 50 items on my wishlist, but here are my top three: Saint Laurent Belt , Thom Browne Bag, Raf Simons Gilet'
What’s your latest non-fashion purchase?
‘A Tom Dixon quill bookmark because I still love the feeling of a hardcover book.’
