The new season's bomber jackets

Share

You’ll be rocking a bomber more than any other jacket in SS18, and here’s why

WORDS BY RYAN THOMPSON

The bomber jacket might be settling into its status as one of the cornerstones of a modern wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean it’s hit a style slump. In fact, it’s going to be SS18’s MVP. But you don’t need to wait for spring, get yours now and layer up till the weather improves…

Gucci’s stripe reversible acetate bomber

Alessandro Michele’s technicoloured party doesn’t look like abating any time soon. One of our favourite pieces from Gucci’s SS18 collection is this blue and red acetate bomber, a look-at-me piece if ever there was one. It also comes with the added bonus of being reversible – a red quilted lining awaits you on the other side. And the tracksuit-esque styling is no coincidence: matching track pants are just another click away.

Alpha Industries’ layered bomber

This hooded cotton bomber is our pick of the season’s lower-priced options. The olive green nylon outer is a nod to the classic military bombers and flight jackets that were repurposed by the punk movement of the seventies, while the cotton hoodie updates it with a sportswear edge. The perfect gym-bound bomber.

AMI Alexandre Mattiussi’s cotton-blend bomber

Beige can get a bad wrap for being about as exciting as a rainy weekend in Luxembourg, but when it comes to next season’s tonal dressing, it’s a wardrobe must-have. Alexandre Mattiussi is a master at creating softly tailored outfits with an air of Parisian nonchalance and this cotton-blend beige bomber fits that bill perfectly.

Diesel’s varsity jacket

While you could quite easily devote pages to the varsity jacket in a category all of its own, it is a bomber jacket in all but name. Stripe collar details, contrast sleeves and lettering, and logo embellishments are the hallmarks of a classic varsity jacket, which is why we’re going all in for Diesel’s grey wool and leather number. Try dressing it up with a pair of buckle derbys or brogues.

Les Hommes’ strap-detail bomber

For the monochrome minimalists among you, a blacked-out bomber should be an indispensable part of your attire this time of year, since it works so well layered with cotton hoodies, tees and sweats. This Les Hommes style comes with geometric buckle straps for a directional take on the utilitarian trend that continues into SS18. Throw it over a black longline hoodie and bookend it with cropped black trousers and some black hi-tops. Sure, you’ll be completely invisible by night, but by day you’ll be hogging the limelight.
