WORDS BY JOSEPH FURNESS
Currently in the sneakerverse, more is more. But of course, an ugly-chunky-dad-mom sneaker isn’t always going to be to everyone’s taste — some people simply desire a pair of classic kicks that will compliment any outfit they're worn with, whether that’s a work suit or a floral dress. Sadly options have been limited for those after a straightforward silhouette, but this week’s Sneak of the Week brings a glimmer of hope...
Adidas to the rescue! The sportswear superbrand has reached deep into their archives to reissue the Adidas Continental 80 (occasionally referred to as the Adidas Rascal), a beautifully basic sneaker. Due to Kanye’s almost identical Adidas Calabasas Powerphase being such a crowd pleaser, Adidas knew they were on to a winner with this release. Both retro and relevant, here is a sneaker for everyone (even the most trainer-phobic among us).
Could you wear these on a date?
Definitely. The simplicity of the Adidas Continental 80 is easy to appreciate but also lowkey enough to ensure that your personality (here’s hoping that you have one) will be the main attraction of the evening. For those of you who struggle to break the ice, I’d suggest opting for something a little more exuberant to compensate.
Could you wear these into the office?
If you can’t get away with wearing these trainers in the office then you should (politely) tell your employer to get with the times. Please note: I take no responsibility for your unemployment if they (politely) tell you where to go.
Could you wear these in a nightclub?
Yes. And I’m not talking about wearing them to a martini bar with a cityscape view, I mean a full-on angry bouncer, entry fee, hand stamp, Belvedere Vodka booths nightclub. For this type of night, the Adidas Continental 80 are ideal. The premium leather used to construct the shoe is so soft that these ‘rascals’ are not only comfortable enough to dance the night away in, they’ll also survive spilt drinks and being stepped on.

What does my grandmother think of these?
“They look dead boring. I think I’ve seen them available in *insert name of a popular budget sports store*. " NB: I totally disagree. And I’d advise you not to take too much notice of her opinion, she’s all about the most EXTRA sneakers around.
