WORDS BY JOSEPH FURNESS
Josie Fear is the definition of a multi-hyphenate. Some may know the London-based creative best for her zestful vlogs on Youtube, others for her dainty Instagram posts of florals and delicate hues, but most will know her best for her renowned lifestyle blog ‘Fashion Mumblr’. Her skills as a fashion graduate and photographer have helped her succeed to a point in which she is now considered an important voice in the industry.
Here, Fear reveals the secrets behind her travel outfits, tips for updating your summer wardrobe and why florals transcend seasons.
You’re rocking the brand-new Chloe ‘C’ bag. Why do you think it’s become the most sought-after bag around?
"I believe Chloe as a whole is having a huge moment right now, with the 'Western' trend returning for SS19, it's a great excuse to invest in their bohemian Wild-West style that’s still so super wearable! The C bag, in particular, is brilliant as it's a great size, it's not too 'in-your-face' and also is incredibly hard-wearing down to the croc effect leather. Chloe does a great job of making their styles versatile; my new C bag works with pretty much everything in my wardrobe!"
You have an affinity for florals. Do you think they will ever go ‘out of style’?
"I truly believe they're an absolute classic, and like 'naturals' they will never go out of style. Florals are always adaptable too. Whether muted, ditzy or bright and bold, florals can be mixed with other trends and made as wearable or as fashionable as you like."
Do you think it’s important to have a style identity?
"I believe that as we grow up and have 'experimented' with our own style, we develop a style identity, whether we are conscious of it or not. If you don't think you've got a style identity, I wouldn't beat yourself up about it, but make note of whose looks you love, what you feel great in, and take steps to wear outfits that represent your personal style."
Name three words that best describe your style?
"I'd say my style is really feminine, classic and romantic."
You have a very strong presence on Instagram. What’s the secret behind your Instagram success?
"I would say that my secret is all about engagement. I think constantly being active is really important. There's no point in posting a photo one day and then checking back a week later and wondering why your following hasn't grown. I would say my tips are to post three times a day, as an ideal number. Look at your analytics, I'm obsessed with analytics, I always like to know what my most popular posting times are."
What are the five staple pieces in your wardrobe right now?
"My Chloe C bag, for sure! I’d also say my long white coat (it's warm and keeps me cosy while the temperatures are cool, yet the white shade makes it perfect for Spring), a pair of light coloured cigarette trousers (so comfy, and yet so smart, and they go with everything), a floral dress (I have so many, I can't choose a favourite, but they work for so many spring events and occasions) and a dainty pair of diamond hoop earrings."
You travel all around the world. How do you plan and find outfit inspirations for each trip?
"I always check the weather first! I hate being cold so like to always be prepared, and then I'll try on all my outfits and take snaps in the mirror, so each outfit is pre-planned and I'm never stuck for what to wear when I travel!"
In your opinion, what is the most stylish destination in the world?
"I actually have to say London. I think you can wear anything here — from a ballgown to jeans and a hoodie. In London, anything goes."
What rising brands are you most excited about this year?
"I am excited to see the swimwear trends at the moment, with Self Portrait launching their new line, and so many beautiful details from Zimmerman for their swimwear, I always get so excited to see such functional pieces getting a style makeover."
What is your favourite trend at the moment?
"I have currently got a weak spot for pearl hair accessories. I have FAR too many but I can't stop buying them!"
Finally, can you give us three style tips to help instantly update our attire for summer?
"Pay attention to fabrics - first and foremost, as great quality fabrics will ensure you always look stylish! If in doubt, keep it simple, in Summer you can't beat a white linen dress and a basket bag! And finally, this Summer it's all about the details; whether it's the perfect bag or pair of sandals or shell-inspired jewellery, the fun finishing touches to your outfit make all the difference!"
