WORDS BY JOSEPH FURNESS
With the impending arrival of your new baby, choosing a changing bag is probably not number one on your to-do list. Albeit, it's often an accessory that frantic mothers wish they had purchased earlier. In fact, a changing bag should be considered a priority purchase, one that you should treat as an investment. Why? Because it’s about to become your fifth limb for the best part of three years.
What should one consider when browsing for the best changing bag? Bear in mind the bag’s quality, its components and (most importantly) its versatility. Trust us to make this all about fashion, but, quite frankly, a changing bag is an accessory that has the power to make or break an outfit.
Here to talk us through their diaper bags of choice are three in-the-know mums: Stephanie, Carlina and Nicole.
Stephanie Liu Hjelmeseth and baby Jacob
Moncler Wearing:
Why have you chosen this particular bag?
I'm already a huge fan of Moncler and I love that this changing bag is made of the same easy-to-clean, high-quality tech fabric that makes Moncler jackets so coveted. The bag is roomy with multiple compartments for all of Jacob's necessities and it's of seriously chic design. I'm walking out with a changing bag every day, so it's an accessory that I have to love and feel good carrying.
What are the essentials that you carry for yourself and Jacob in your bag?
For Jacob, I always pack extra diapers, changing needs, an extra onesie, his snacks, baby sunscreen, and a light blanket. For me, I always carry my bottle of water and a couple of nutritious snacks as well as my portable camera for spontaneous moments.
Where would you and Jacob go for a fun day out?
I love taking Jacob to the Grove in LA. It’s a place where we can have a nice lunch together, play in the park and watch the fountain water show. It completely captivates him!
Why would you recommend investing in a designer diaper bag?
I recommend investing in a designer changing bag that is high quality and well made to last through babyhood. Since it's something that I carry daily, I'm investing in a style that’s both functional and sophisticated.
Will you continue to use your bag when you no longer need to carry diapers?
A child's needs change over time, but what I've heard is that the amount of “stuff” never lessens. A mom always has to be prepared, so I imagine the bag will still be full of toys, food, extra clothes, etc. In the long run, it makes for a very stylish weekender bag for me!
Is there any advice you’d give to first time parents when choosing the best changing bag?
Look to a brand you already love! You'd be surprised at how many brands have a changing bag option. Buy a bag that fits your personal style and never feel the need to buy according to the baby's gender. I'm all about carrying a pretty floral changing bag for myself, even with my baby boy!
Carlina Harris and baby Lucia
Wearing: Tiba + Marl
Why have you chosen this particular bag?
I've always said I'm not going to wear a changing bag that looked like one and this sleek Tiba + Marl backpack certainly doesn’t look like your average ‘diaper bag’. It even looks masculine enough for my husband to wear! I also liked that it's a backpack, making it easier to travel with Lucia while carrying around her stuff.
What are the essentials that you carry for yourself and Lucia in your bag?
For Lucia, I carry diapers, wipes, a fresh onesie, blanket, muslin cloth, a bottle of milk (if we are going on a long trip) and a pacifier. I carry snacks and chapstick for myself!
Where would you and Lucia go for a fun day out?
She loves looking at bright things and the sights of the city, so we'd pack our Tiba + Marl backpack and head out for a long stroll in the city. We’d then end up at a cafe so I can grab a coffee or wine during her nap once we get to our destination and maybe even pop into an ice cream shop on the way back home!
Why would you recommend investing in a designer diaper bag?
I've always believed in quality over quantity. One good bag is way better than ten mediocre ones. Plus, your kids will probably want to use it for themselves one day.
Will you continue to use your bag when you no longer need to carry diapers?
This backpack is so sleek I will definitely be using it once Lucia is no longer a baby. I'll be carrying it to work — laptop, notepad and even gym clothes in tow.
Is there any advice you’d give to first time parents when choosing the best changing bag?
Know what you need the bag for as identifying what you'll use the bag for makes picking the right one easier. For instance, this Tiba + Marl one is perfect for a day trip as it fits the essentials. Also, make sure there are lots of pockets and that it's comfortable enough to tote to and from.
Nicole Berrie and baby Sea
Wearing: Chloé Kids
Why have you chosen this particular bag?
I love this Chloe bag because it brings back the equestrian print that they did in the early 2000s — a nostalgic purchase for me as I still have a silk top with the same print on it. I also love how compact and lightweight it is compared to other bulky bags and it doesn't actually look like the classic changing bag (which is certainly a positive thing).
What are the essentials that you carry for yourself and Sea in your bag?
I always have a few Bambo diapers (which are eco-friendly and made with bamboo), Water Wipes, Earth Mama Baby Balm and somethings for Sea to snack on like apple slices or dried mango. For me, I can't live without Dr. Bronner's lavender hand sanitizer spray and lip salve.
Where do you and Sea go for a fun day out?
We usually walk by the Hudson River now that it is summer in New York or just a stroll to our local playground so she can chase after her older brother Jude!
Why would you recommend investing in a designer diaper bag?
As our family grows, I am more aware of making sustainable investment purchases rather than buying into fast, disposable fashion. I know a well-made bag will last and be durable — that’s super important to me. It's also super chic!
Will you continue to use your bag when you no longer need to carry diapers?
This style is so chic and such a classic design; I can definitely see myself using this as a travel bag for the weekend or even as a gym bag!
Is there any advice you’d give to first time parents when choosing the best changing bag?
Choose one that has a side pocket to place a bottle or sippy cup for quick access and focus on light materials as you will be packing it with heavy things inside. They should look for something that’s light-weight, soft and compact so you can squeeze it in under a stroller or in overhead compartments while travelling. I'm usually carrying so many bags. The last thing I need is something super heavy and bulky.
