WORDS BY JOSEPH FURNESS
If we were to compare the fashion industry to Pokemon (which we do, often), Christine Centenera would be a limited-edition shiny card: she’s the one that everyone wants as part of their pack.
Best known as Vogue Australia’s Fashion Director and co-founder of Wardrobe.NYC, Centenera has worked with everyone from Virgil Abloh to Kim Kardashian — so she knows a star when she sees one.
And since stumbling upon Dion Lee’s graduation show in their native Australia, she has been the number one fan of his eponymous brand. Now that both live in New York, her support for her fellow ex-pat stems from a shared appreciation for elegant fashion; both creatives have an eye for the refined. Just like Centenera, Lee’s vision is forever sleek, understated and effortless. We asked Christine to fill us in on her relationship with the designer and why she feels his contribution to contemporary fashion is so vital.
How did you meet Dion? Can you talk about how you began working together?
We met after his graduation show in Sydney. I went backstage after seeing his graduate collection and introduced myself. I could see immediately that he was very talented. I was working at a magazine at the time and would ask him to make me special pieces for photoshoots etc. We went on to work on his first few collections and shows together.
How have you seen his work evolve over the time you’ve known him?
Yes, definitely it's matured and grown up.
Do you feel Dion’s collections are well suited to showing in NY? If so, why?
I think he's inspired by New York City - its people, architecture, art scene - the environment in general - so it makes sense for him to show here.
How does Dion Lee represent the current era of fashion?
I think he is part of a current generation that takes risks, he's an innovative thinker and is always looking to move things forward. Dion is like a sponge - in that he can soak up visual inspiration and energy around him and put that into his work - this is what keeps him relevant.
Who suits Dion Lee?
I think the Dion Lee woman spans across cool young boys and girls to mature men and women wanting to feel great in a well-cut suit or dress.
What messages are communicated through Dion Lee’s collections?
I think his attention to detail shines through the most. I think his collections explore his intricacy and complexity in a beautiful way.
What’s most recognisable about a Dion Lee purchase?
Again I think it's the attention to detail but also his unique design and precise fit.
What’s your favourite piece by Dion Lee?
My favourite is a black mini dress with pleated panels that are woven across the chest from one of his first collections.
