WORDS BY AMELIA BELL
Meet designer Sander Lak – the man behind the New York label that's lifting everyone’s mood. Launched in New York, Sies Marjan is the confetti-coloured, ebullient label that's earned the designer this year's CFDA award for emerging talent. The latest collection embodies his fascination for colour - ombré shades offset with dusty greens and icy blues, appearing like an intense dream. We spoke to the designer for some lessons in colour and style…

What's your inspiration?
Sander Lak: ‘We don’t work with inspirations in the traditional sense, we start by developing colour cards: finding the perfect shade of colour and then pairing that with fabrics and shapes that make it even more remarkable.’
We’re very happy you’re doing shoes now. What should we know about them?
‘Clients have been asking about our shoes since the very first show so we are excited to make them available this season. Just like we do with the clothes, the footwear plays with colour, texture and form.’
Why do you prioritise colour throughout your work?
‘To me, colour is one of the most powerful ways to show emotion: it's so abstract and has a different reference for anyone looking at it. There’s no denying that putting on a bright pink shirt will improve your mood. We have tested this theory in the office – and it really works!’

If you could only buy one piece from your collection on Farfetch, what would it be?
‘It’s hard for me to pick favourites, but I am partial to the Sander Shirt (for obvious reasons).’
What’s your favourite style tip?
‘Don’t be afraid to try colours that you might have been afraid of. You might surprise yourself.’
Can you give us a hint on your next exciting project?
‘I can’t reveal too much right now… But I love collaborating and working with amazing talents so there will be more of that in the future! Some very exciting things coming soon!’
‘And finally, the burning question… What did you last listen to on Spotify?
‘I am going to sound really old school, I guess, but I don’t have Spotify… I have this online radio station I listen to non-stop called 8 Radio.’
