How to hog the limelight this Chinese New Year

WORDS BY Julie Duan

The start of a new year in the Lunar calendar heralds many things; those glorious red envelopes, enough jiaozi to feed a small burgeoning nation, and the inevitable brutal vivisection of your love life by all four of your middle age aunts. Familial landmines aside, the obligatory New Year gatherings are a chance to truly show off your sartorial chops. Yes grandma, I’m still an assistant- but look how sparkly these Givenchy boots are! We’ve rounded up the most attention-grabbing party pieces to help you channel your inner Anna Dello Russo, and kick off the Year of the Pig with a bang.

Dazzle your way through 2019

Attico is everyone’s go-to for ‘look at me’ party pieces. 80s silhouettes, extravagant embellishments, and decadent glamour are all themes we want to be carrying with us into the new year.

Gold is the new red

▼ Shop the Look: 01/ MSGM Gold metallic cracked T-shirt  02/ Valentino Garavani Rockstud Spike clutch

03/ SAINT LAURENT Opyum pumps  04/ VERSACE Baroque-print pleat skirt

If like me, you’ve run out of red-toned attire, gold makes an equally powerful statement. Go big with a full-on metallic outfit, or opt for a less grandparent-shocking approach with glimmering shoes and handbags. After all, the New Year is all about happiness and fortune right- and what screams fortune more than gold?

Go literal

▼ Shop the Look: 01/ MCM Zoo Pig keyring  02/ JW ANDERSON Spotted Pig Bag Charm

03/ COACH pig cardholder  04/ GUCCI Zip around wallet with Three Little Pigs

Some brands like to subtly nod at the Lunar Festival through exclusive collections- others, like JW Anderson, want you to know that they’ve really embraced the Zodiac calendar. Sporting a pig motif is is a fun and witty way to inject a little New Year spirit into everyday life. Understandably, if it’s all too on-the-nose for you, these accessories also make the perfect gift for someone else (I volunteer as a tribute).

Happy holidays!
