How to Wear Modest Clothing

Share

WORDS BY DAISY SCOTT

From island retreats, office meetings to bridal showers — here at FARFETCH, we've cultivated our favorite modest pieces and gathered our styling tips to help you understand how to dress modestly.

Here are some key pieces and styles that can help you bring your personality into modern modesty.

Everyday Life

When it comes to the everyday routines and errands, there are days when you want to feel comfortable and moments when you want to show off your style to the world. With some simple updates, you can take your everyday style to the next level.

Start with something everyone has in their closet. Everybody owns a pair of denim pants — they’re a staple. By choosing a pair of denim pants that matches your personality, you can update any of your outfits, and the best part about denim jeans is that they are easy to style up season-upon-season.

Look to Tom Wood organic cotton wide-leg jeans and faded MSGM straight-leg jeans for an effortless look (with added comfort too). The relaxed fit of both jeans means they look great with a classic cotton T-shirt you already have in your closet and your favorite pair of sneakers, as well as a structured top and crystalized heels.

Styling tip: Double denim can be done well — keep the shades of denim slightly different to add contrast to any of your outfits. Look to this Stella McCartney mock-neck jacket for inspiration.

At the Office

At the office, it's easy to get stuck into an outfit routine — but that is no more.

When it comes to suits, they don't always have to be traditional — it's time to think bigger, brighter and bolder! It’s fun to play with prints and color blocking (if suitable to your workplace).

A simple way to ease yourself into suiting is by starting with a pair of high-waisted pants, these can be a transitional way to begin your updated office closet. Wear them every day with a neutral-toned cashmere rollneck or even a crisp white shirt — look to these Brøgger checked wool pants for the perfect introduction piece.

Of course, nothing is stopping you from going all-out with the matching blazer or swapping out the white shirt for something a little more extravagant. We’re thinking ruched detailing and billowing sleeves, such as this SHUSHU/TONG gathered shirt.

If you’re not a big fan of pants, then look no further than this Maison Margiela high-waisted denim skirt. Match yours with baggy knitwear or structural tops for something a little sleeker.

Styling tip: a perfectly tailored blazer can elevate any outfit, whether it’s outside the office or at your 9-5. We adore this Jacquemus La Veste blazer with flap pockets, cinched-in waist and attached wrap-around belt.

For the Special Occasion

When you want to show off your style, there’s no time like a celebration that can help you do that. Whether it’s a bridal or baby shower, you can enjoy your favorite pieces in your closet time and time again.

For theatrical festive statements, look for bright jewel tones and voluminous silhouettes, this coral pink asymmetric Oscar de la Renta dress should be on everyone's list.

Of course, you can never go wrong with some feathers; look to 16Arlington for feather-trimmed extravagance and if you’re more of a crystalized embellishment girl, find the SHATHA ESSA bead-embellished dresses that light up the room (literally!)

Prefer a minimalist style? Look to sleek asymmetric cuts that suit your silhouette-orientated style; we think this Jil Sander asymmetric cut-out cape would complete any existing wardrobe staples for the special event.

Styling Tip: Add the finishing touch with an embellished bag or showstopping pair of shoes — we love this Vanina Le Medusa flapper bag and crystalized Amina Muaddi Romy pumps.

On Vacation

Depending on your vacation, there are many ways you can bring modest style into your suitcase.

Thinking of checking into an island getaway? It's key to pack organic fabrics that keep you cool — we’re talking light cotton dresses and shirts that can be re-worn, both day and night. If you love lounging on the beach, take your M Missoni crochet kaftan for nostalgic nods to the ‘70s and a light layer.

Or perhaps you’re more of a city explorer? Adding a versatile jacket will elevate every outfit in your suitcase. Look to our Valentino double-breasted jacket where you can have fun playing with monochromatic outfits or keep the jacket as the talking point.

For the vacation dinner, we think that a minimalist white dress is the ideal option — not only can you re-wear this in the future, but it is a confident staple in your closet. Our choice? Brøgger’s ruffled puff dress.
