New Season, new rules

Make an appointment with the officewear we’re Fall-ing for right now...

WORDS BY AMELIA BELL

Every cloud has a silver lining, and as summer draws to an end, the prospect of a wardrobe update is the best thing for keeping post-holiday blues at bay.

To make the transition easier, we’ve rounded up the best trends to work into your office wardrobe this fall. New season, new rules.

Countryside Heritage

This season, the likes of Victoria Beckham, Stella McCartney and Fendi are playing a geometric game with oversized herringbone, heritage checks and sensible tweed. The look is grown-up and elegant with vintage flair. Note: suits are your perfect entry point to the trend.

We’re taking inspiration from Raf Simons’s Calvin Klein debut, and his chic makeover of the corporate grey suit.

Our advice? When it comes to workwear, mix up the fabrics; a dogtooth tailored suit paired with a tweed bag; or a plaid scarf draped across a herringbone coat.  The multitude of textures adds a new dimension to print clashing and makes suit dressing more fun.

The Cardigan

September accoutrements are not complete without the addition of a knit. And this season, the cardigan is back.

Little upgrades equal big impact when it comes to this knit; a bold hue, boxy silhouette or polka-dot print will steer your look away from ‘granny’ territory, bringing it firmly up to date.

For your office attire, choose a crochet cropped cardigan with tailored separates and a delicate shirt. Or a long-line number, teamed with a midi pencil skirt, long-sleeved body and Valentino rockstud ballerinas for a casual approach to workwear.

Two-Tone

It’s time for a little colour coordination, dominated of course by the hue of the season - red.

We’ve seen runway after runway transform into a sea of scarlet, with splashes of crimson and bursts of berry everywhere from Givenchy and Roksanda to Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Alexander McQueen.

But mastering AW17’s two-tone dressing also means embracing red’s fierce opponent, fuchsia. If your office dress code permits, try layering fire-engine red clothing and add magenta accessories. Otherwise, select a more reserved colour palette - perhaps navy with burgundy or blush-pink with camel - for a more relaxed take.

Corduroy Comeback

Adding a touch of corduroy to your everyday wardrobe will catapult your look into the new season. Take inspiration from Kenzo, Ralph Lauren and Mulberry’s AW17 shows and choose autumnal hues of mustard yellow, burgundy and burnt orange as your colour palette.

This Saint Laurent midi skirt will become your new go-to piece for a modest office ensemble, but it’s Kenzo’s red corduroy flares you’ll need to invest in if you’re wanting to turn a few heads.

Shirt On Shirt

A modern twist on your classic shirting rules - we’re all doubling up for AW17. Simply choose your favourite style (ruffled, cut-out or deconstructed) and pair with a similarly striped skirt. For a more professional look, add a cropped boxy jacket and smart patent brogues.
