Holly: ‘Elegant, feminine, forward-thinking.’
Tiffany: ‘Minimalist, low-fuss, monochrome.’
How do you celebrate Chinese New Year in your city?
Holly: ‘There are lots of public showcases of traditional Chinese music and art during Chinese New Year in DC. Young children usually receive Hong Bo (red envelopes containing money) from elder relatives.’
Tiffany: ‘For Chinese New Year in San Francisco, our whole family usually gathers at my parents' house, where we make dumplings and eat and drink all day.’

What do you usually wear on the day?
Holly: ‘Something new and something red. Red is the color of happiness in Chinese culture.’
Tiffany: ‘My mother would admonish me if I didn't wear red since it is supposed to scare away evil spirits and usher in fortune for the new year.’
How does what you wear for Chinese New Year differ from your everyday style?
Holly: ‘Firstly, the color. I incorporate more vibrant and happy shades like red and gold. Secondly, I wear more luxurious fabrics like velvet and silk brocade that are more common in traditional Chinese outfits.’
Tiffany: ‘I'm more mindful of the fact that I need to wear red.’
