MBFWA has kicked off in Sydney this week and there’s a whole lot going on – fresh design talent, high-octane shows and a fun-loving fashion crowd. Our eyes on the ground? Aki, photographer, art director and founder of style blog, The Sleek Avenue. Here’s what she saw...
What were your MBFWA highlights?
“It’s the discovery of a new city and reuniting with international friends that share the same passion for style. Personally, my favourite part of fashion week is the bringing together of creatives from around the world. It’s fascinating!”
Which designers stood out for you?
“Lee Mathews and Camilla and Marc. I love shows that stretch their story beyond design by transforming their vision into the set, music and ambience. Lee Mathews fast forwarded to spring; Camilla and Marc took us on an intergalactic odyssey with the space-inspired set and soundtrack. I’m also super excited for MacGraw tomorrow.”
Describe your favourite things to do between shows…
“Exploring the city – when it comes to the landscape and cuisine, Sydney is one of the best.”
Who are the emerging Australian designers to watch out for right now?
“I love Lee Matthews’ play on fabric and colour. Then there’s Anna Quan, who always pushes boundaries when it comes to simple tailoring. Customisation is a big trend this season and their personalised cuff embroidery is simply beautiful.”
Talk us through today’s outfit…
“Today I’m wearing Dion Lee’s fire-engine red turtle neck with cut-out detail, Ellery’s signature oversized flares (a personal favourite of mine) and artistic Jacquemus shoes. For me, a good outfit is a balance between familiarity and surprise.”
How did you get into fashion photography?
“I’m an art director at an advertising and PR agency so I’ve always been interested in creating imagery, whether it’s for a client or my personal portfolio. Creative work is so subjective that for me, it makes most sense to stay hands-on when it comes to crafting the look and feel of my brand. It’s a constant learning curve, but I really enjoy being involved with everything from creative direction, styling and photography to video editing.”
What are your sources of inspiration?
“I love discovering new places – I’m constantly looking for a city’s hidden gems. When I find a new place, I find myself visualising a new photo or video campaign and how it will come together. That’s what prompted me to start my Instagram account, I wanted to transform those thoughts into reality.”
What’s your aesthetic and personal style?
“I’m a maximalist. I love colour! I like to play, explore and push – most of the time I’m a tomboy, but once in a blue moon I like to surprise people with my feminine side. After all, fashion is about having fun.”
