WORDS BY AMELIA BELL
‘It’s grim up North’ they say. However, Somerset House’s latest exhibition begs to differ - when it comes to the style stakes at least. The London venue is (theoretically) venturing out of the fashion capital to shine a light on this somewhat unspoken fashion powerhouse, lest we forget the incredible home-grown creatives like Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Christopher Bailey, Gareth Pugh, and their incredible cultural impact.
It’s also got us thinking about admirers of the North from further afield, and by that we mean those raved-about Raf Simons’s parkas featuring Peter Saville’s iconic album prints and the exciting collaboration between Off-White’s Virgil Abloh and Haçienda nightclub designer Ben Kelly.
The exhibition opens today and runs until February 2018, showcasing over 100 photographs, garments and art works by some of the design industry’s most important names - including pretty much everyone mentioned here. But if you can’t make it to the exhibition, either logistically or because you’re transitioning into full-on winter hibernation mode (and we would never judge you for that), you can still appreciate these talented northerners right here, with our pick of their latest offerings...
