The Varsity Jacket

The Accessories
Ivy Leaguers love a bit of merch. While a Princeton baseball cap is one way to go, fashion seniors know it’s all about the collegiate striped tie.
Burberry has long been a go-to for the East Coast aristocracy and even though it has added a heavy dose of streetwear grit in the last few seasons, it’s still a mecca for all things preppy. This tie, for example, has Valedictorian written all over it.
The Rugby Shirt
Winston Churchill once said that “Rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen” and from these gentlemen we shall take our style cues. Making their way from the field of play into our everyday wardrobes, the Rugby shirt is experiencing a revival.
Whilst Gucci and Versace take the Ivy League uniform and drop kick it into the 21st century, trusty Polo Ralph Lauren keeps it classic with bold stripes and a stiff white collar.
The Loafer
A long time waspy staple, lots of brands are offering a wacky take on the loafer this season. Alexander McQueen and Jimmy Choo go down the ostentatious route with big embellishments and an abundance of glitter but its Salvatore Ferragamo’s chunky reboot that stands out.
Slip these on and slip right into an Ivy League mixer.
The Tweed Jacket
Tweed has its roots in British heritage but we’re not afraid to claim it as part of an American elite’s uniform. No matter of age, size or gender a tweed jacket is always a safe bet.
To give credit where credits due, we look to Holland & Holland (a traditional British shooting brand) for our example. The classic green virgin wool and three button front make damn sure you’d fit in either side of the Atlantic. Now, Pull!
The Chino
Well, what else can you pair your tweed jacket with? JFK taught us (amongst other things) that it’s cool to mismatch your suits. Slacks go with just about anything.
Super-Scandi brand Acne Studios might not be your first thought for Ivy-league style but this season they are serving up preppy staples galore including but not limited to the humble chino.
