Global City Style Series: Bogotá

Share

WORDS BY JADE BROCK

Bogotá is alive with energy and possibility. An epicentre of culture that oozes all-things cool, it’s safe to say the fashion world has a long-standing obsession with Colombia. From Johanna Ortiz’s colourful dresses to Silvia Tcherassi’s couture-inspired clothing, the country never fails to translate Latin American flavour into coveted collections. Beyond the catwalk, a sophisticated street style reigns supreme in the capital — the beating heart of Colombia known for its eclectic yet authentic aesthetics.

Revived with a cascade of shops, bars, restaurants and galleries, there is a certain romantic languor to Bogotá. The city packs a cultural punch with over 100 art galleries, a buzzing food scene, idyllic coffee houses, and some of the country’s best street graffiti — there are even free city tours that explain the social and political commentaries the artform seeks to convey. Firmly rooted in the culture of his native country, we’ve talked to Andres Espinosa to get the lowdown on Bogotá style, as well as his personal fashion inspirations and go-to spots to hang out in the city.

How would you describe the fashion in Bogotá?
Bogotá is like a blank canvas when it comes to fashion choices. The city’s located on the equator yet it’s quite high up in the mountains so the weather’s sort of an eternal spring. It gets very cold when it’s cold, but we also get to enjoy warm sunny days too. It might not sound like much, but this gives you endless styling opportunities to dress up or down. Bogotá itself is a radiant city, full of people from all over the world. Factor in the innate warmth of Colombians and you’re left with an upbeat and positive community with quite an eclectic style. You really see everything here.

How has the city influenced your style?
I’m a fashion photographer, so I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by a host of creative minds regularly. This is a key influence of my personal style because you get to take in different points of view on global fashion. There is also a sense of pride to be Colombian, and this translates into artisanally crafted pieces I wear from a mixture of local brands. When the city as a whole celebrates our culture, it’s only natural for this to permeate our personal style too.

Where is your go-to spot in Bogotá?
Usually somewhere around Chicó or Rosales, after all this is where I live and work. It just so happens to be where most things happen in Bogotá too. I love to go for a run in the park and meet people for coffee and lunch. Luckily the best cafés and restaurants in the city are within walking distance for me.

Where do you like to go out?
I like to keep busy, so whenever I have time to enjoy myself I’d definitely choose an amazing restaurant that serves good wine (trust me, we have a lot of good ones). Aside from the exquisite cuisine, I like to nourish my creativity as this is the glue that holds my life together. An escape to the MAMBO — Bogotá’s Museum of Modern Art — is mandatory.

Can you tell us more about this iconic place?
The MAMBO was opened in 1963 by historian and art critic Marta Traba. It’s situated in La Candelaria — the vibrant heart of Bogotá — and has a beautiful and locally sourced red brick exterior, designed by renowned Colombian architect Rogelio Salmona. The museum’s mission is to promote a pluricultural space filled with our national heritage and contemporary art. It’s an absolute must-visit for a deep dive into Colombian culture, or to source inspiration.

Where do you like to go shopping?
This is a tricky one. I love small concept stores that celebrate Colombian brands, you can always count on them to find unique pieces and support local designers. When it comes to luxury shopping, your options are slimmer. There are a few multi-brand boutiques, and then there’s, of course, FARFETCH that makes the entire shopping process easy.
