Spotlight on Stone Island: The new key pieces & sizing guide

Words by Suzie Bakos

It’s impossible to talk about culturally significant, luxury streetwear and not mention Stone Island. The Italian brand has been integral to the streetwear scene since it was launched by designer Massimo Osti in the 1980s, when British football fans would follow their teams to European cup games and bring back designer pieces from local fashion houses. The now-iconic compass badge became a part of British culture and global demand rapidly followed: its kudos has since spread to the music scene, particularly amongst rappers, with everyone from Skepta to Drake and beyond showcasing their Stone Island obsession.

Cult-cool aesthetic aside, Stone Island is revered for producing garments that really last. These high-tech, often military-inspired designs are what set the brand apart from its competitors. Although Osti passed away in 2005, the designer’s original blueprint for innovative technical pieces — color-changing, heat-reactive fabrics, weather-protective techwear, reversible reflective styles and dual-layer jackets — have become an inspiration for other streetwear labels to follow suit.

Read on for the five Stone Island pieces every fan of the brand should own, including down-filled puffer jackets and most-wanted accessories, plus your essential Stone Island size and fit guide.

Stone Island double-layer jackets

Earlier this year, Stone Island marked its 40-year anniversary with a brand new capsule titled 82/22: a nod to the brand’s founding year, 1982. Styles from this collection, including this double-layer jacket, were stamped with ‘82/22’ graphics across the back, made with jacquard techniques in a contrasting hue.

As with all of Stone Island’s designs, this jacket fuses good looks with innovative technology to create a long-lasting leisurewear option. This padded jacket is down-filled with numerous pockets, quilting, long sleeves and a metallic finish for those who appreciate something a little different. Made with a mid-weight, non-stretch fabric, it’s available on FARFETCH in pink and black.

But are Stone Island jackets warm? Stone Island jackets are made to withstand all weather conditions, but not all of them are suitable for keeping you warm. If keeping cozy is your priority, look for Stone Island pieces that feature down insulation and/or multiple layers.

Sizing: This double-layer jacket is cut for a slim fit and fits true to size, so we recommend you get your regular size.

Care: The first thing an owner of a Stone Island jacket should do before washing their garment is check the washing instructions on the attached label. Generally speaking, it is recommended that you turn your Stone Island jacket inside out, wash it at a low temperature and then leave it to air dry. Under no circumstances should you machine dry the layer.

Stone Island bags

Much like the mainline collection, Stone Island bags are designed to be functional as well as stylish. Case in point: the drawstring backpack. Two adjustable shoulder straps create the perfect fit when carrying, while a fold-over top keeps everything secure and various pockets allow easy access to necessities when on the go. Sleek and easy to wear, it’s the perfect go-to for busy city days — choose from dark green, yellow, black and blue colorways.

Sizing: Product measurements: D x 15cm, H x 50cm, W x 40cm. Handle: 10cm, strap 42cm

Care: To extend the life of your Stone Island backpack, the brand recommends you avoid washing where necessary as this can alter its color intensity. When cleaning is needed, remove detachable accessories then machine wash separately and inside out at a maximum temperature of 30°C and on a very mild cycle. Do not use detergent directly on the garment and do not twist or wring the bag.

Stone Island knitwear

Warm, soft and colorful — it’s easy to see why Stone Island’s selection of long-sleeve mid-layers are a popular entry point into the brand. In particular, Stone Island’s knitwear offerings are emblematic of the brand’s innovation. Tightly knit, twisted or thick yarned, Stone Island’s knitwear utilizes intricate jacquard techniques to create unique patterns.

For this sweatshirt, available in blue or olive green, the brand uses 100% cotton, and brings the crew neck to life via an abstract pattern with the iconic logo print to the chest and the compass patch to the sleeve. It’s a detail that has become integral to the Italian house’s DNA and something its loyal fans have come to expect when investing in its collections.

Sizing: This sweatshirt is cut for a relaxed fit and fits true to size, so we recommend you get your regular size.

Care: When it comes to looking after your Stone Island knitwear, it is advised to always read the product’s specific care label before attempting to wash. This particular sweatshirt should be washed separately and inside out at a maximum temperature of 30°C and on a very mild cycle.

Stone Island puffer jackets

The puffer jacket has become the cornerstone of a Stone Island wardrobe. This pared-back outerwear option is down-filled with a drawstring hood and warm padding throughout. It’s made with a mid-weight, non-stretch fabric, so it doesn’t feel too heavy to wear and is cut for a loose fit, making it perfect for layering over Stone Island knitwear.

With minimal detail and classic appeal, this fuss-free jacket is simply accented with the brand’s compass motif on the sleeve. Choose from olive green, pink, dark gray and pearl gray options.

Sizing: This piece fits true to size. We recommend you get your regular size.

Care: Every Stone Island item is different but the brand recommends reading the care label attached and avoiding harsh washing treatments. This puffer jacket can be machine washed once detachable accessories have been removed.

Stone Island accessories

Finishing touches are something of an artform at Stone Island. The Italian house has perfected its accessories line thanks to luxury materials, the latest technology and signature iconography. Take this balaclava hood: its detachable panels allow versatile wearing options, as the adjustable strap creates the ideal fit and press-stud fastenings mean a quick on-and-off experience. Choose from sage green and black colorways.

Sizing: Available on FARFETCH in sizes medium and large. Medium measurements: 61cm circumference. This hat fits true to size and we recommend taking your regular size.

Care: Keep your Stone Island hat well cared for by gently hand washing separately at a maximum temperature of 40°C. It is advised to use neutral detergent and avoid twisting or wringing.

How does Stone Island fit?

While early Stone Island silhouettes were once renowned for running big, the brand’s designs are now predominantly slim fitting. So, if you prefer an oversized look, we suggest you opt for a size up from your regular size. All of Stone Island's pieces follow Italian sizing standards.

Stone Island sizing and fit tips

  • Stone Island hoodies fit true to size, although you may want to size up if you'd prefer an oversized fit.
  • Stone Island sweaters and knitwear pieces are slim fit, so we recommend sizing up.
  • Stone Island jackets fit true to size, but size up if you’re into winter layering — especially if you’re considering one of the brand’s parkas.
  • Stone Island trousers fit true to size but could be a little long if your legs are on the short end of the spectrum.
