The wait has been long. French new wave rockers Phoenix have been working on latest album Bankrupt
since 2011 and it finally lands this month. It’s understandable really – the band’s last offering, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
, is a hard act to follow, widely considered a classic of this millennium.
If you’ve heard the new album’s lead single, Entertainment, which dropped earlier this year, you’ll know that the sound is classic Phoenix, and doesn’t deviate from their winning formula, why should it – they’ve absolutely cornered the market in charismatic synth pop with rock undertones.
Phoenix have always been a band that the fashion set flock to, since exploding onto the music scene with their debut, United in 2000. We’d guess that that’s due in part to the fact that theirs is the kind of music that makes you feel cool when you listen to it, but with the added bonus of being actually enjoyable.
The other reason is that Thomas Mars (aka Mr Sofia Coppola), Deck D’Arcy, Christian Mazzala and Laurent Brancowitz have that effortless, understated way of dressing that the French do so well.
It’s a look they’ve perfected during their decade in the spotlight – think the occasional eclectic military piece mixed in with rock wardrobe staples of the highest fashion pedigree, sunglasses, leather jackets, close-fitting suits, slim but not skinny jeans and some bashed up sneakers to add character.
The release of Bankrupt looks set to be a treat for the eyes and ears. Welcome back boys, we’ve missed you.
