‘With clothes, I'm not scared of something different. I'm not scared of something that people might not understand,’ says the rapper, producer, DJ and all-round musical authority Swizz Beatz. And when it came to his festive Farfetch shoot, he was as good as his word, heading straight for pieces by the young fashion upstart Jonathan Saunders and the directional French label Mugler.

The man once described by Kanye West as ‘the best producer of all time’ made his name with bombastic party records, including the hit International Party, on which he collaborated with his wife, the superstar singer Alicia Keys.

These days we might be seeing a softer side to Swizz. During our shoot he listens to the ethereal Scandinavian singer Lykke Li; and he is fast building a reputation as a serious art collector. But his wild streak remains firmly intact. Keys puts it best, explaining: ‘[He has] the fastest, brightest car, the biggest jewellery, the loudest jacket, everything with him is really over the top.’

In short, he sounds like our kind of party role model so, before he headed back into the studio to work on the rapper DMX’s much anticipated comeback album (‘Everything is DMX for me right now,’ he explains), we asked Swizz for his party secrets, in the hope of recreating our own festive season of effortless cool.

Party guru

Fab 5 Freddy: I feel that we have parallel lines as far as how we interact with music and art culture.

Favourite party look

My first suit that amazed me with its fit was this one-of-a-kind Cavalli. It fit me so perfect. I went out to an event in it, saw the pictures on the red carpet and thought, "I like that look. I'll stick with that". Before then I would wear pants saggin' because I didn't care what people thought about my style. Now I try to be inspirational every chance I get.

How to dress for an event

Every man should have an assortment of belts, ties, bow ties, cufflinks, comfortable socks, different kind of hats for the mood and Kamikaze [cocktails]. But, most importantly, you need something nobody else has, something in your wardrobe that’s a one-off.

Party tunes

James Blake and Ela Partiu by Tim Maia to wind things down.

Signature dance move

I don’t have a signature dance move – I’m the DJ. I even DJ’d at my prom!

Drink of choice

Patrón [tequila]. And all kinds of red wine.

Party pin-up

Alicia Keys and disco-era Diana Ross.

Worst party disaster

Throwing a party in the wrong rented Hampton house. The owner came downstairs to find it in full swing. It was just a mix up.

When is bedtime?

Never.

Hangover cure

Organic apple juice or coconut water. I’m happy to wake up every morning, I don’t need coffee!
