New Fashion Favourite: Simone Rocha

by Hollie Moat

Simone Rocha Autumn/Winter 12

Simone Rocha has a refreshingly simple idea of who she is designing for, ‘a woman who wants to buy beautiful things’. So it makes sense that her creations would follow suit. And they do – elegant but unassuming pieces that boast clean lines, dreamy colours, and an expensive, subtly luxurious finish.

The daughter of Dublin-based, Portuguese-Chinese designer John Rocha, it hasn’t taken the 26 year old long to prove that there is way more to her than just a famous family name. She cut her fashion teeth with a BA in her native Ireland before completing the hallowed Masters degree in design at Central Saint Martins and then spent several seasons as part of notorious talent breeding ground Fashion East before debuting a London Fashion Week show of her very own for Spring/Summer 12.

Autumn/Winter 12 is her second season flying solo, and highlights Rocha’s skill in taking complex inspirations, namely the tribes of Papa New Guinea crossed with Dublin children of the Thirties, then translating them into something serene and wearable.

Whereas breakout stars from the London schedule in recent years have tended to be in the line of print (Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto, Holly Fulton), Rocha’s area of expertise is textiles, and by her own admission ‘For me, what’s really exciting is mixing old and new fabrics. Hard and soft. That’s what makes it fresh’. And throughout the collection, sweet A-line skirts, neat little sweaters and smart shift-dresses mix up mohair, P.V.C, leather and tulle as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

In fact, such is the allure of Rocha’s fun but chic minimalism that even die-hard exhibitionist Lady Gaga has been photographed wearing her pieces on more than one occasion. Last Fashion Week Rocha created an instant must-have with her ‘hand-bag’ which showed a lace glove in-between the transparent layers of a bag, so we’re more than looking forward to see what she comes up with in London in a few weeks time. Not that she’s giving anything away, explaining ‘I always keep this (what we can expect from her show) very close to me, right up until the very end as everything always changes last minute’. But no doubt it will be brilliant anyway.
