The Chicago-based singer-songwriter relishes returning to her apartment in the Hyde Park neighbourhood after months of being on the road, touring and performing. When I’m on tour, I’m constantly talking, constantly smiling and being “Ravyn Lenae”, and I feel like when I get home I can just be myself. I miss my bed when I’m away. Sleeping in hotel rooms or on a tour bus gets really old really quickly.’
I’ve always been into fashion and music, but having my own space made me tap into a new creative medium that I hadn’t experienced before. It took me a while to get there, but after a bit I understood that I want my space to feel peaceful and calm. After doing shows and performing, it's nice to come home to something that's just quiet.’
I can see it at all times of the day, and it’s a constant reminder of where I am and how important the city is to me. I think my favourite room is the living room, because I feel most creative here. My studio set-up is in here. I have my writing chair in here. It's just really peaceful, and I can look out to the lake and see people walking.’
I live in Hyde Park, which is on the south side of Chicago, where Barack Obama is from. It's very diverse now – probably the most diverse part of the city in terms of age, ethnicity and such. I love it over here.’
