The beauty of self-expression

In celebration of Pride month, we champion self-expression. Wearing bold, standout makeup looks shot exclusively for FARFETCH, actress Lux Pascal and model Joakim Gjemmestad discuss their self-affirming rituals, the luxury of freedom and the power of representation.

The power of representation

For model Joakim Gjemmestad, representation is vital to younger members of the LGBTQIA+ community feeling affirmed in their identity. They believe, ‘representation is important because some kids don’t have support systems encouraging them to discover their own paths. All they have are characters on TV shows to help them feel seen, and help them believe that they belong in this world and that there is a safe space for them. Not everybody has people uplifting them and guiding them through life, so we have a responsibility to showcase the full spectrum of beauty to the world; every race, size and identity. We can’t continue only showing what society has been telling us is beautiful — we have to share all of the beauty that’s still hidden and just now emerging.’

The self-affirming rituals

Beyond being a form of creative expression, beauty is a powerful tool on one's self-love journey. Gjemmestad shares, ‘When my confidence is feeling low, I practice some mirror-meditation while brushing my teeth, or putting my skincare and makeup on. I take these moments extra slow, look myself in the eye and say uplifting words of affirmation. When even that feels like too much effort, just take the time to appreciate what you can in the moment — your skin, your body, your hair. Even if your self-love only extends to one aspect at the time, just be grateful for the patches of beauty you do find in yourself.’

The luxury of freedom

When it comes to self-expression and exploration, the ultimate luxury is being afforded the time and space to do so on your own terms, without constraints or limitations. ‘I think what helped me through my journey of finding pieces of self was space. I’m lucky enough to have had my family give me the space, support and tools to explore whatever part of myself I wanted to. There wasn’t a limit put on me or a finish line I had to cross — what I was in that moment, if it was enough for me, it was enough for them, too.’

The key to personal expression

Making beauty choices that are authentic to her likes and desires allows actress Lux Pascal another avenue of affirmation. She says, ‘In terms of beauty looks, I always try to embrace and honor my femininity, and have fun with it. I feel it’s sometimes suppressed or looked down upon in the world, but I view it as one of my strongest assets — and what feels feminine is very personal to me and I assume it’s personal for others. For makeup, I like to apply my skincare first, then maybe wear a light-coverage foundation. I'll follow that with a fierce cat eye, blush and highlight on the high points of my cheeks. Sometimes I'll pair brown mascara with a bold red lip. But, regardless of how I look or how I choose to portray myself any given day, it’s all about how I am feeling on the inside — taking care of and honoring my authentic self.'

The self-affirming rituals

Whether simple or indulgent, beauty routines imbued with restorative practices can go a long way to reviving a tired body and a restless mind. Pascal’s go-to ritual; ‘If I ever have the time, I really like to have a whole day to myself where I can just take a nice relaxing bath, wear a face mask and moisturize my body from top to toe. Maybe at night I’ll go out with friends or stay in and have a good night’s sleep. I always like to do something that makes me feel renewed.’

The luxury of freedom

Actively seeking moments, places and people that put her at ease is vital to emboldening Pascal’s self-expression. She shares, ‘Beauty comes with freedom of expression, and I always try to be watchful of not keeping myself from being expressive. I try to look for situations and places that will encourage me to feel beautiful — peaceful, fun and open spaces. I feel beautiful when I’m out dancing with friends. I feel beautiful when I take a long vacation with someone I love in a relaxing place. I feel beautiful when I am surrounded by family and friends, and people that see me and encourage me to keep being my authentic self.’
