Golden Goose Deluxe Brand Sneakers: A Sizing, Fit & Styling Guide

Sneakers are meant to be kept box fresh, right? Wrong. For every sneakerhead nervously navigating their way through life, dodging puddles and wincing when someone treads on their toes, there are twenty other people who are more than happy to wear the same pair of sneakers for every activity (whether that’s raving in a field or walking in the rain), and respond to someone stepping on their footwear with a smile. For some, sneakers are made to be worn and kept in a pile gathering in the hallway rather than their corresponding shoeboxes, as alien as that may sound.

But there’s another group going a step further, by buying their sneakers pre-distressed – it’s a kind of ‘if they’re already beaten up, then they can’t get much worse’ mentality – and the brand that’s become the de facto leader of this movement is Golden Goose Deluxe Brand. In a refreshing change from the pristine sneakers that seem closer to ornaments than trusty old friends like your most beaten up Converses, the Italian sneaker brand distresses its offerings to look worn in from the get go.

Designed in Venice yet globally inspired, each silhouette from Golden Goose was made to capture stories and experiences from all over the world and communicate it aesthetically. Take their signature model the ‘Superstar’: it mixes scuff marks you might get from shredding bowls in downtown LA on your skateboard, with the shape of a vintage basketball sneaker, yet it also looks like something your favorite indie band might’ve worn to death on tour, or what The Ramones had on when they went to CBGB. And this is what makes Golden Goose so special – the fact that any pair evokes memories of bygone eras or travels abroad, of iconic periods in sport or the birth of cross-Atlantic music scenes.

But as distressed as they may be, there’s a method behind the madness with these shoes. Handcrafted by Italian artisans with generations of experience and knowledge in cobbling, a Golden Goose sneaker has the same levels of craftsmanship found in the loafers and Derbies of your favorite high-end Italian fashion house. It’s traditional, yet contemporary. What’s more, the unique imperfections that come with handmade items only add to the unique allure and indeed the soul of each sneaker.

Essentially, Golden Goose make sneakers that are made to enrich your life rather than take it over. They’re of excellent quality, but you don’t feel like you have to be precious over them; they’re made to be beaten up and made your own. Feel like you’re ready to embrace imperfection? Read on to find out everything you need to know about all things sizing, styling and fit with Golden Goose Deluxe Brand sneakers.

I got the Golden Goose running sole sneakers earlier this year and absolutely love the design. They have the coolest contrasting patterns that immediately caught my eye and I thought: ‘This is an Amelia shoe.’ Usually I wear sleeker and less chunky trainers, but I wanted to find something that I could create more of a fashion statement with. These have the perfect platform that don’t make my feet look too big like other trainers I’ve tried previously.

There are so many fun ways to style this shoe – I usually wear them with a pair of skinny jeans and a cute top, and sometimes even a blazer to smarten up the look. The pattern makes these the statement piece in any outfit so I like to keep things simple on top. I think I’ll pair them next with a fun and easy mini dress. These are my happy trainers; I can’t help but smile when I wear them.

Sizing & Fit:

If you’re looking to buy a pair of Golden Goose trainers, I’d stick with your usual size – mine fit perfectly. This varies with different styles of sneakers; I’ve had to return a few brands due to sizing but can really rely on Golden Goose.

They’re extremely comfy, you can wear them all day – in fact, I do. If you’re on your feet for most of the day, I’d definitely recommend these. The running sole sneaker has been one of my most surprising and successful purchases as it’s not something I’d usually go for, but I would now get in five other colors. If you’re looking for a fun and more unique style of trainer, Golden Goose is my favorite.

Since I got my trainers, they haven’t needed any special care, but I have a few tips that I’ve learned over the years that help keep them looking as new and clean as possible. Firstly, if you get any dirt marks on them, use a dry brush – it almost always comes off. Secondly, a really easy tip is to wash your laces, which maintains the color and makes the whole trainer look fresher.

I’ve been a big fan of GGDB Superstar sneakers for a few years now. They’re so unique, which really appeals to me. They come in different colors from neon tones to pastels, and various textures like velvet, canvas and leather, alongside many different details like glitter and crystal embellishments – the options are limitless. They are true statement shoes.

I love the fact that you can dress them up or down. I usually wear them with a floaty dress and jeans; however, they look amazing under a suit jacket and trousers, too. They create a nice contrast.

Sizing & Fit:

They’re absolutely true to size. If you’re between sizes, always get the next size up as they don’t do half sizes. They have a generous fit and, although I have wide feet, I find them extremely comfortable. I walk around London all day every day so comfort is the key and these are the most comfortable designer sneakers that I have! They’re incredibly comfortable, I’ve tried at least 7-8 different versions of GGDB sneakers and have never had a problem with comfort. In comparison to other designer sneakers, GGDB are better for walking in.

It really depends on the material you choose – if it’s velvet or shearling obviously you can’t wear them on rainy days. I always try to be more careful with the crystal-embellished ones, because I don’t want to lose crystals on rush hour subway or crowded streets! But generally, leather ones are low-maintenance; you can just wipe them clean from time to time.

I’m kind of a sneakers addict, they’re essential items for my style. The Running Sole sneakers are my absolute favorites: I love how they mix Golden Goose’s signature detailing with a sporty aesthetic. I like wearing colorful and printed sneakers to accent my outfit, so these sneakers are very me.

Firstly, I’ll always pick out one detail from my Golden Goose sneakers (e.g. snakeskin print, purple colors, or metallic materials) which can set the theme of my outfit. If I focus on the snakeskin print, I’ll choose pants with the same pattern; if I pick the purple coloring, I’ll choose a jacket or jumpsuit with the same color. It’s important for me to match the vibe of the sneakers with my outfit.

Sizing & Fit:

My usual size in sneakers is 24cm but I chose 24.5cm for these as slightly larger size can make my body look more balanced and in proportion. Golden Goose sneakers are a little bit looser fitting compared to other sneaker brands.

Golden Goose sneakers are so comfy – even after walking in them for a long time my legs never feel tired. Although they don’t have as much cushioning as other sportswear sneakers, they’re super easy to walk in because of the high platform sole which is very stable.

I don’t take any special care of my sneakers but I’ll always store them in a dry and airy place in order to avoid humidity.

For me, it’s essential to have a go-to sneaker that can make an outfit sick no matter what, which is why Golden Goose has become a staple in my closet. I confess to owning more than one Golden Goose style, including the Superstar, Ball Star, Hi Star, and the Slide. Lately, I’ve been way more into the Ball Star just because they’re actually one of the most comfortable sneakers I own. I wear them so regularly that they’ve molded to my feet; so much so that I can now slide them on and off without untying the laces, which is a plus.

Most other high-fashion sneakers aren’t as timeless as Golden Goose’s – my first pair are still in my closet and I still wear them many years later. My first pair was the Superstar style which I made sure got plenty of use in order to make them worth buying. Even though I do hold my first pair dear to my heart, I can confidently say that the Ball Stars are my new favorites and will be my next sneaker purchase. The Ball Stars have a vintage feel which I’m really into and they make any outfit look sporty yet trendy which is perfect since I always tend to dress more on the sporty side.

My style tends to sway more towards the tomboyish as I constantly find myself looking for clothes in the men’s section or wearing my dad’s or boyfriend’s clothes. Therefore, I always wear my sneakers with loose-fitting bottoms and an oversized tee. However, on the rare occasions that I do wear a more girly look or need to dress up a bit, I’ll wear a skirt or dress yet will always throw on my Golden Gooses to balance out the girliness. Keeping that cool and unique factor going is essential for me. Also, my Golden Gooses come in handy when I’m trying to dress up yet want to avoid heels at all costs, which is basically always. Golden Gooses aren’t just any sneakers, they make a statement and work with any type of outfit from casual and sporty to more elegant and feminine.

Sizing & Fit:

In terms of sizing, I’d say that sizing is true to size. I’m in-between a US 7.5 and an 8 and when purchasing the Golden Goose sneakers I go with an EU 38.

In regards to comfort, that truly depends on the particular style of sneaker you’re going for. As mentioned above, I personally think that the Ball Star style is the comfiest in comparison to the Hi Star and the Superstar, which have a more sturdy heel and a less flexible platform making them less comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no style of Golden Goose that I’d categorize as uncomfortable, but I do have to vouch for the Ball Stars, which are the next level of comfort. Every pair of Golden Goose sneakers I own have survived multiple rounds of spring cleaning, while many of my sportswear sneakers haven’t, which is testament to their functionality, versatility and longevity.

I wouldn’t say that I have a care routine for my sneakers per se. When I purchase sneakers I don’t like to keep them in pristine condition – I want to enjoy them, meaning I’ll wear them as much as I can to break them in and really make them mine. Golden Goose sneakers are sold distressed, which is perfect because even when they’re well worn, they still look brand new, which is another reason why they last a very long time. One piece of advice I learned the hard way: avoid wearing them if you know you’ll be in mud or snow, as this will damage the suede fabric. However, if they get extremely dusty and dirty I’ll just grab a washcloth, soak it in warm water, and gently rub them clean.
