This city is into self expression. From the best vintage markets to the coolest cafes, four locals share their secrets on Seoul’s best bits, and shed some light on how its residents really dress.
‘I live in Gangnam, just south of the river. I think people in Seoul are pretty stylish, they all have their unique tastes but do tend to wear monochrome. I love colour, so sometimes people think I’m a little too avant-garde. I also love vintage clothes. There’s a vintage market called Dongmyo, near Dongdaemun – it’s one of the largest markets in the city. It often has really great pieces, hidden under piles of clothes.’ In shot: Lia wears top by Ambush and jeans by Alexander Wang.
‘The best thing about living in Seoul is its endless supply of quirky cafes – they’re so original! In one place you can drink your coffee with raccoons and meerkats, and in another you can enjoy a pastry in a swimming pool. In terms of style, it tends to differ between neighbourhoods. It’s more creative in Hongdae, whereas it tends to me more formal in Gangnam.’ In shot: Kyujin and Kyuwon wear blue jacket by Maggie Marilyn (left); yellow jacket by Maggie Marilyn, trousers by Materiel and bag by Marc Jacobs (right).
‘I live in Suwon – it’s about an hour outside of Seoul. It’s less hectic than the city, but there are some great little cafes that can be quite lively. In terms of people’s style, I’d say it’s quite indistinct here, but I personally love to mix up my style and focus on one or two statement pieces in a look.’ In shot: Min Young wears blazer by Low Classic and boots by Semicouture.
