Comics! Cowboys! Playing cards! Decoding the SS18 shows
Want to know the thinking behind this season’s key collections? Look no further: here’s what made our favourite designers’ moodboards.
Prada
Like everybody else, Miuccia Prada wanted an escape from reality this season. So she delved into the world of comic books: cue Lichtenstein-esque prints and ka-pow! colours.
Calvin Klein 205w39nyc
‘American horror, American dreams.’ Raf Simons went dark at Calvin Klein, referencing films from The Shining to Carrie. Horror movies inspired the blood-red palette, slick vinyl and paint-splattered leathers.
Dsquared2
Hawaii meets the leather bar? It shouldn’t work, but Dsquared2 is nothing if not a provocateur. And the result is a grab bag of high-impact separates, from floral shirts to leather accessories.
Gosha Rubchinskiy
This designer’s adolescence in post-Soviet Russia continues to be a fertile source of inspiration. For spring, Gosha combined 2 of his teenage loves: football gear and rave culture.
Raf Simons
One of menswear’s most prolific collaborators across art, music and design. This season, Raf Simons worked with Peter Saville – the man behind the artwork for Joy Division and New Order – to produce a collection inspired by post-punk music and science fiction.
Dolce & Gabbana
Never ones to back away from a theme, Dolce & Gabbana have done everything from medieval knights to the Wild West. This season, the label looked at the eighties Memphis design movement, which inspired the collection’s graphic prints and playing-card motifs.
