The Georgian capital is firmly on the fashion map now, thanks to this roster of talented young designers and street style stars…

WORDS BY ALEXANDRA RHODES

Call it the Demna Gvasalia effect, but over the past few years, Tbilisi, Georgia, has become a hotbed for emerging fashion talent (and a hip travel destination to boot). Yes, in addition to being the the birthplace of Vetements and Balenciaga’s game-changing Creative Director, the post-Soviet republic has been quietly building up the reputation of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tbilisi and shining a light on some of the country’s most promising designers. Here’s what you need to know...

On the catwalk

Situationist

This emerging label is known for its youthful take on Georgian cultural heritage: think oversized sweaters featuring graphic appliqués of the symbol of Mother Georgia and shirts reworked from the national flag. Situationist really hit the headlines when Bella Hadid was spotted out and about in thigh-high boots and a long leather trench coat from the AW17 collection.

Tamuna Ingorokva

This Georgian native is usually talked about for her Kill Bill-style leather jumpsuits, but now it’s her minimalist tailoring that’s really causing a stir. Each piece is crafted in Ingorokva’s atelier, where she has a team of 6 tailors working for her. The result? Sophisticated staples made with couture-like precision.

On your radar

Shop: Pierrot Le Fou

Pierrot Le Fou looks as good as the clothes it sells. The concept store, founded by Georgia-based artist, photographer and interior designer Lenka Tsitsishvili displays a unique selection of art as well as a beautifully curated edit of clothing from designers such as Rick Owens and Maison Margiela. A regular on the street-style circuit, Tsitsishvili’s personal style lies at the heart of this must-visit boutique.

Eat: Book Corner Café

The much-pinned Book Corner Café is the perfect setting for a quick pick-me-up. Situated on the banks of the Mtkvari river which runs through the city, it is a haven amid the hustle and bustle.

Only the natives know: Orbeliani baths

Tired of all the shopping? You can’t leave Tbilisi without a trip to the hot sulphur baths. Known for their healing powers, the water will leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated. Don’t miss a plunge into the ice-cold pools, it’s the perfect jet lag cure!
