WORDS BY JOSEPH FURNESS
Outlander Magazine is a social media publication that keeps an eye on the past, present and future of fashion simultaneously so that you don’t have to. Followed by thousands of style-conscious individuals on Instagram and Twitter, the online magazine prides itself on being a rich source of news, expertise and inspiration that covers the most pivotal happenings in the industry. As for who’s behind the Outlander Magazine — well — that’s a secret. Akin to some of the most august contributors to the creative arts, the omniscient souls that established the publication prefer to remain anonymous.
We recently reached out to the founders of the platform and asked them to take FARFETCH on a sartorial journey through time. Keep reading to explore the past, the present and the future of fashion in company with Outlander Magazine.
The Past
In your opinion, what are the best fashion shows of all time?
My favorites are the early Maison Margiela shows. Personally, I think the best was the spring 1992 runway, held in a French underground station that was decorated with candles for the show. Having said that, I would say Margiela’s very first show — held in a derelict playground in Paris — is also a strong contender for the top spot.
What is one fashion moment that will forever be relevant to you?
It's got to be Flaunt Magazine’s 2001 photoshoot starring a Chrome Hearts-clad Snoop Dogg. When Outlander Magazine recently resurfaced the image, it served as a reminder that fashion moves in a circle, so never put too much pressure on yourself to be completely original.
What archival pieces have you always wanted to get your hands on?
Easy: the Walter Van Beirendonck PIXYDUST trousers that debuted in 2003. Other pieces I would love that aren't archival (but are just as hard to get a hold of) are the leather belt jacket and the faceless watch bracelet from the 2012 H&M x Maison Margiela collaboration. Oh, and I really want some early Billionaire Boys Club pieces, especially those that Pharrell would rock in magazine shoots back in the day.
Which 20th century style icons do you think our readers should seek inspiration from?
I recommend searching the term, ‘1990s celeb airport outfits’ — those comfy ‘fits are so cool. I would also recommend taking style cues from Teddy Pendergrass, but please do bear in mind that his sauce cannot be imitated.

The Present
Who are the most influential dressers in the world right now?
When it comes to men, it’s Steve Harvey, Pharrell (always), A$AP Nast and Gunna (Free YSL). For the women, it’s Snoh Aalegra, Rosalia, Iris Law and Alexa Demie.
Which brands define the current vogue?
At Outlander Magazine, we don’t usually care for trends as they can distract from one’s personal style. That being said, if you’re someone who enjoys trends and being current, I'd recommend investing in Balenciaga and any of the New Balance collabs.
Which brands are you expecting to see tastemakers sporting this summer?
It's hard to predict what the truest tastemakers will be wearing as they’re prone to stepping out in totally unique pieces. However, I expect to see a lot of ROA, Denim Tears, Bode, Wales Bonner, Martine Rose and — of course — Balenciaga.
What shoes and accessories will instantly upgrade any outfit this summer?
Accessories need to work with your persona for them to have any lasting effect. You can just throw them on and expect to have sauce automatically. For instance, grillz can add something special to most ‘fits, but you have to be able to get away with them for the look to work. But some general words of advice: find yourself a solid tote bag, keep your socks colorful, and have fun with sandals and loafers during the evenings.

The Future
What fall/winter 2022 collections are on your radar?
As always, the Heliot Emil collection. But aside from that, Rainmaker fall/winter 2022 features some really tasteful layering pieces; AMBUSH’s shearling jackets are a staple for the colder months; the Givenchy balaclava caps are insane; and the Priscavera fall/winter 2022 collection is cool.
What pieces are you hoping to see the in-crowd sport come fall?
Mohair cardigans and pullovers styled with subtle pieces; mesh tops under large coats; Asics sneakers instead of New Balance sneakers; Y/Project pillow scarves; and Bottega Veneta by Matthieu Blazy footwear.
What layers should our readers start thinking about investing in for next season?
Set your sights on a good, long overcoat. Look to Dries Van Noten, Maison Margiela or even Bottega Veneta if you’re happy to spend a little more. Also, realize the value of a good scarf — the right one will instantly enhance your ensemble.
