What my mother taught me: James Kicinski-McCoy on the style lessons she’s inherited

Share

James Kicinski-McCoy has learned a lot from her mother. In fact, she’s made a career out of it: her much-loved blog, Bleubird, explores fashion, style and everyday life through the lens of modern motherhood. So to celebrate Mother’s Day, who better than the writer, editor and Nashville native to discuss the impact of style passed down through the generations?

Do you and your mom swap or share clothes?

"I think my mom actually started borrowing my clothes once I was in high school. She would steal my jeans, I would steal her old t-shirts. It’s interesting how we both influenced each other’s style over the years."

How has your mother influenced your personal style?

"She had a real hand in guiding my taste in music, which is a huge fashion influence of mine. I’ve always been inspired by music; whether it’s updating an outfit with a vintage band tee, or learning to take bold risks."

Has she handed down any pieces to you?

"Yes, a few. The one that I cherish most is an old, grey and black Grateful Dead tee — it belonged to my mom in high school in the 1970s. Now it’s paper thin and you can barely read the writing. I love it!"

Who are your favourite designers, do you have any favourites in common with your mom?

"My mom and I have always shared a love of Levi’s 501s, but my all-time favourite has to be Phoebe Philo."

What’s on your Farfetch wishlist?

‘’So many Ganni floral skirts. I love effortless Scandinavian style and think they look great juxtaposed with vintage tees, or perhaps an insouciant boyfriend blazer.’’

Do you and your mom have any shared style icons?

"’Cher, John Lennon, David Bowie and Diane Keaton."

Describe your style in three words...

"One part polished tomboy, one part subtle femininity, seemingly effortless."

Describe your mom’s style in three words...

"Classic, unapologetic and always one to make an entrance.”

Finally, which of your style traits will your children inherit from you?

"I hope they are never afraid to experiment with different styles because fashion is always evolving — there’s never just one thing, or one style. I want them to have fun with clothes, accessories, and trends."
