Dressing up needn’t be arduous. Here, three women from three different backgrounds share how their life informs their approach to occasion dressing. Plus, see their favourite picks of SS19.
‘I grew up in the East Village in Manhattan, and I’m living there again after spending a little time in Brooklyn. The way I dress is ever-evolving, but it’s always based around femininity and simplicity. Lately I’ve been making a lot of my own pieces – I learned how to sew, and I love making my visions come to life.’ In shot: Shereen wears jacket and trousers by Rejina Pyo.
‘I’ve been living in Paris for 10 years, though I was born in Seoul. I’m drawn to textiles, but I prefer simple lines – I love Missoni, for example. When I’m dressing up I tend to gravitate towards my favourite designers – the ones I normally couldn’t wear in my daily life. Then I alter the pieces so they are the perfect fit for me.’ In shot: Moon Kyu wears dress and earrings by Oscar de la Renta.
‘Living in Los Angeles I’m drawn to simple silhouettes that look like I’m just leaving a ballet class, or a bit tousled, like I have been painting all night. I like to mix men’s basics with a chic bag, heel or beautiful lingerie. I tend to choose pieces that, at first glance, seem classic or conservative, but then expose a revealing sheerness, a daring low back or an extremely high hemline. I think it’s important with occasionwear to keep it fresh. Adding a fun accessory, like the Balenciaga heart earrings or a messy ponytail, continues the theme of juxtaposing styles, which can be seen throughout my everyday style and art.’ In shot: Natalie wears dress by Oscar de la Renta and earrings by Balenciaga.
