Farfetch staffers Candice Fragis and Ryan Thompson reveal 5 stealth ways to make sure you come out a winner this season.
WORDS BY ALEXANDRA RHODES
Ah, the sales. It’s the time of the year when it’s all too easy to lose focus and end up believing that a 7-sleeved vinyl roll neck is a totally inspired style choice in the face of a good discount. That’s why we’ve enlisted the work of the pros, Farfetch’s very own Buying and Merchandising Director Candice Fragis and Menswear Fashion Features Editor, Ryan Thompson, to share their expert tips so you can be prepared. Sit up and take note…
1. Create a wishlist
‘My number one shopping tip for any major sale event is to start preparing a little bit in advance by adding things to your wishlist. It’s the best way to make sure you’re buying the things that you actually want’ says Candice. ‘Prioritise your wishlist on Farfetch and don’t deviate from it. Stick to your guns!’ agrees Ryan.
2. Stock up on investment pieces
You can’t go wrong with a cashmere sweater, perfectly cut T-shirt or leather jacket. ‘If you’re not interested in trends, Black Friday and the end of season sales are an amazing opportunity to stock up on basics and wardrobe staples’ says Ryan. ‘With everyone else looking for that amazing steal, you can quietly hoover up classic items that you can wear year in, year out, regardless of season.’
3. Never compromise on size
Repeat after us: Don't buy anything in a different size unless you’re genuinely committed to having it altered. ‘Often what we do in the middle of a sale is say “oh it’s a half size too big or half size too small...yes I want it”, but don’t do it. Buy your size. Buy well.’ advises Candice.
4. Do your homework
Many of next season’s rising trends are already available now - so what are you waiting for? Ryan’s tip? ‘I always like to prep up on the trends for next season, then zero in on current season products that will make the transition.’
‘If it’s a trend you’ve been thinking about for a while that takes your fancy but you’re a little worried about buying into it, now’s the time to do it, or to trial it’ adds Candice.
5. Have fun
Finally, enjoy yourself! Shopping should make you smile. ‘The sales are a good opportunity to have a little bit more fun with your purchases. Perhaps buying into a color or shape or even a brand you are less familiar with’ says Candice. ‘I’ve always got my eye on a few key pieces that I think will really add to my wardrobe, but I also like to find things that I wouldn’t ordinarily buy myself, such as jewelry’ adds Ryan.
