The very best things to do, see and wear
Words by Hollie Moat
It’s July, and the heat is on… But sartorially speaking, we just want to get stuck into AW17. Luckily, this month’s Hot List is the perfect balance of summer treats and new-season looks.
As we head into that ‘difficult’ area between seasons (when the weather can’t make its mind up and no outfit seems quite right), clever dressers invest in a piece of versatile knitwear. Look to styles that can be worn as a cover-up now, and layered to perfection as the months progress.
What to wear: This season, you should remove words like ‘plain’ and ‘simple’ from you knitwear vocabulary. AW17’s offerings are colourful, eye-catching and fabulous.
Carne Y Arena at LACMA, Los Angeles, USA
Birdman and The Revenant director Alejandro G. Iñárritu is the creative force behind this virtual-reality installation, one that explores the human condition of immigrants and refugees. The immersive experience hits the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on 2nd July.
What to wear: LA’s art crowd have a discerning eye for appearances, and you’ll want to look smart but not try-hard. Relaxed tailoring or cool monochrome will work well.
Port Eliot Festival, Cornwall, UK
Taking place at the historic seat of Lord and Lady St. Germans, this culture fest also offers swimming in the estuary and picnics under 300-year-old trees. Literary fans can enjoy talks by writers like Louis de Bernières and Daisy Buchanan between 27th and 30th July.
What to wear: Embrace a quirky and eclectic literary-lover aesthetic by getting creative with colour and details, and piling on the accessories.
Running of the Bulls, Pamplona, Spain
For those who don’t know about one of Spain’s most famous cultural traditions, every year between 6th and 14th July, crowds accompany bulls as they are led from the corrals in Calle Santo Domingo to the bull ring. It’s part of the fiestas of San Fermin. There are also rockets.
What to wear: Participants dress in all white with a red scarf. And it goes without saying you’ll want to be comfortable and ready to run!
Game of Thrones Season 7
Expect to see just about everyone you know ditch the sunshine on 16th July, when television’s most talked-about show makes its longed-for return. Producers have promised a faster pace for this shorter run, and trailers have already teased at least one epic, dragon-fuelled battle.
What to wear: You’ve heard the ’Thrones mantra: ‘Winter is Coming.’ We’re taking that as the perfect excuse to start our coat shopping early.
