Four cities. Four jewellers

Sophie Bille Brahe, Copenhagen

‘Living in Denmark influences everything I do. The architecture, the design history, my friend’s style… There’s an attention to design and craftsmanship here that comes through in our love of jewellery. We prefer to save and buy something special and well made.’
'The girls in Copenhagen are very effortless in the way they dress: stylish, without looking overdone. They combine jewellery in interesting ways, like layering lots together or just wearing a single earring on its own.’
'My parents had a cabinet full of curiosities, which I was allowed to play with as a child on special occasions… I’d find wonderful things from all around the world, and once discovered a ring in a beaten-up old box. It was this ring that started my passion for jewellery.’

Charlotte Chesnais, Paris

‘I feel so good when I’m in Paris. The architecture is so rich, every building and street has its own story. It has a real impact on my research and design process. Parisians are very effortless. They don’t wear a lot of jewellery and neither do I, just a pair of earrings and a ring is fine. That’s why I try to make strong yet simple pieces.’
‘My love for fluid lines is inspired by furniture. I’ve been obsessed with it ever since I can remember… the curves and soft lines of Charles and Ray Eames, Pierre Paulin and Warren Platner.’
‘French ateliers are the best. Since launching the brand almost four years ago, I’ve met some amazing French craftsman with a unique savoir-faire. The quality is really high here. I have an amazing team that I’ve been working with for years, even during Balenciaga.’

Shihara, Tokyo

‘The craftsmen here in Japan are extremely skilled, they have an ability to see how I envision my designs. The work I do can only be done by hand, but the craftsmen I work with are able to make it feel very polished and precise. Between designing, development and sampling, some pieces can take more than a year [to create].’
‘I’m often asked why my earrings are sold in singles as opposed to pairs, but this has always been natural to me. I don’t view jewellery as a decorative item, but something that’s an extension of the wearer. My brand’s not bound to conventional methods of jewellery design, so I always look forward to seeing how people wear it.’
‘When I was [younger], I noticed one thing that hadn’t changed historically in jewellery design: the use of parts to create closures, fastenings and links. That’s what prompted me to design geometric forms where these [details] are incorporated as part of the piece.’
