For International Women’s Day, four women, from four walks of life, talk about the female figures that inspire them and the fashion that makes them feel great.
‘Sometimes I feel sleepy, tired or shy – but when I put on a powerful outfit, I have the confidence and energy to get up and live my life. These days I would describe the way I dress as Anime Tomboy Roleplay Angel Demon.’
‘My mother taught me the most. She was always working, but also always bringing us to events in the community and surrounding us with her girlfriends. I consider myself a non-binary person and a black woman, and my parents’ love and interest in making me a whole person was persistent and beautiful. Fashion is my conduit to be myself – to me, it affects how we interact with the world and vice versa.’
‘Style makes me feel powerful. It’s important to me that I feel like myself. I learned that from my mother: she moved to London at the same age I was when I moved to New York. I have her spirit.’
‘My grandmother lost her husband when my mother was seven years old. She raised my mom and my aunties without relying on anyone. She taught me always to be self-reliant. And the women in my life gave me the ability to see that there are more important things in life than fear. It has made me the woman I am today.’
