It’s the most… miserable time of the year? But it needn’t be. We fully intend to beat the blues this January and we want you to join us. Yes, it’s cold and the party’s over, but there’s a calendar chock-full of cultural treats to enjoy and a new season wardrobe to get building. Presenting our top five picks for the month ahead.

Words by Hollie Moat

This year, Chinese New Year falls on 28th January, and in grand tradition the nation’s capital will be ringing in the Year of the Rooster the night before, with a dazzling firework display – a visual feast unlike any other. Don’t forget to follow it up with jiaozi dumplings, to signify prosperity.

Style tip:
Red is the colour to be seen in. It represents fortune, happiness and vitality, and scares away evil spirits. But absolutely no monochrome – black and white are unlucky.

So SS17 might finally be here, but that doesn’t mean the weather is ready to accept it. Ease into the new season with a fine knit that can be layered up while chills linger, then worn alone or as outerwear as the months (and the sunshine) progress. A true wardrobe hero.

Style tip:
Embrace the joys of spring by opting for something bright and cheerful – stripes are a good choice as they will integrate easily into your working wardrobe.

Inject some fun into drab winter by experiencing this all-singing, all-dancing technicolor cinematic love letter to Old Hollywood from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle. Starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, it also happens to be the Oscar front-runner – extra cultural brownie points.

Style tip:
In the movie, leading lady Mia looks like a Jacques Demy heroine, and so should you. Embrace retro silhouettes, girlish details and glorious candy colours.

The third album from the Mercury Prize-winning trio drops 13th January, and fans of the British band’s alternatively blissed-out and moody electro can also snap up tickets for the record’s accompanying tour, starting in Sweden on 8th February and moving through Europe before hitting the festival circuit in South America.

Style tip:
The band themselves are rather fond of sporting top-to-toe black – it suits the dark, dreamy quality of their music and always looks chic, so who are we to argue?

Dining always poses a conundrum this time of year: to detox or to comfort eat? That’s why places like the achingly cool (and Met Breuer adjacent) Flora Bar in New York are heaven sent – its fish and vegetable-focused menu strikes that perfect balance between healthy and satisfying.

Style tip:
Complement the eatery’s sleek interiors with a relaxed yet elegant ensemble: a pair of wide, tailored trousers or culottes are the perfect piece on which to build this outfit.
