MY WORLD / Chloë Sevigny

‘I just get dressed. I don’t have a definition for it – I wouldn’t know how, or want to.’ Chloë Sevigny doesn’t like to define her approach to style. The rest of the world does. The actress and filmmaker gives us a glimpse of how her style was shaped, and edits the new season. Photography by Brianna Capozzi. Styling by Haley Wollens. Above: Chloe wears Gucci.

‘I still have a lot of my mom’s clothes. I have a storage space in Connecticut – my brother says it’s like an archive because it’s so organised…

Everything is alphabetised in case I need my mom to go and get me something. It’s a little ridiculous – I’ve tried to purge it recently. But I still have my First Communion dress, my mother’s prom dresses, the dresses that her bridesmaids wore. My mother had trunks full of old clothes that she’d acquired from thrift shops: hats and dresses, and sequined leotards; I used to wear them all together as a kid. As a fantasy, I guess.’ Above: top, skirt and shoes, all by Prada.

‘I love Anna Magnani. She’s the best. Her look is so unconventional…

Even her face. She was not a conventional beauty by any means and she’s one of the greatest actresses of all time – she should continue to be celebrated and I think will be, forever. I hope young girls discover her, and her passion and her veracity when she’s acting. It’s overwhelming. I post about actresses all the time on my Instagram – from Rosie O’Donnell to Marlene Dietrich, Rosie Perez to Alla Nazimova. And I think Bette Davis’ “The Lonely Life” is one of the best biographies about being an actress. I like bold, big lives, extreme lives. You know, tons of husbands, tons of career.’ Above: cardigan, cropped polo shirt, skirt, shorts (worn underneath), socks and shoes, all by Miu Miu.

‘We’re so overwhelmed with images of quote-unquote conventional beauties…

It’s important to celebrate diversity: different types of body figures, different types of faces. I think, or I hope, that girls that look at my Instagram will see these different actresses, different ages, different colours, different ethnicities; maybe recognise themselves in these women, and see that beauty comes in all shapes and colours, and forms and sizes – it’s not just the regular things you see on Instagram.’ Above: dress, boots and bag, all by Proenza Schouler; and skirt (worn underneath) by Helmut Lang.

‘I try to avoid disposable brands at all costs. And I’m lucky that I have the privilege that I can afford to do that…

I do find that investing in pieces are worth it. I think that Vivienne Westwood, Miuccia Prada and Simone Rocha have all created these lifestyle brands, and they never waver from their vision. They never go with the trends. They are very specific to themselves. And I just find that really admirable. I think there’s always a weird alternative element to what I wear. I think that’s so ingrained in me from the tribes I associated with when I was a teenager. Now, I’m just trying to own it more and wear things that I feel really strong and powerful in, kind of, like, classy, maybe even expensive.’ Above: dress by Montana, bodysuit by Alexandre Vauthier and shorts by Y/Project.
