You probably have a picture of New York style. The reality is a little different – especially when it comes to accessories. We asked three men to discuss how the Big Apple’s residents are wearing watches now. Photography by Soraya Zaman.
‘I feel like the New Yorker is more daring when it comes to style. Some use dark colours to make accessories stand out. Most people invest in statement pieces. For me, I couldn’t live without my watch collection. When I wear a fine watch, it feels like I have graduated into another realm of watches and accessories. I always feel like my outfit is incomplete without a watch. For me, it is the centerpiece of my overall style.’ In shot: Salomon wears watch by Girard-Perregaux.
‘I have watches for different occasions, but that wasn’t always the case. That’s the beauty of watches. One can do it all, or you can switch it up for your mood or occasion. A good watch to me feels substantial, and by that I mean that you’ve earned it. It becomes a symbol of your hard work. It’s the “closer” for me; the piece that finishes off the outfit. In terms of style, I love classic designs with a modern twist.’ In shot: Brendan wears watch by Ulysse Nardin.
‘How a man carries himself is reflected in his choice of watch, so my watch will always have a backstory, a rare and refined level of craftsmanship, and a complementary functionality for the outfit and environment I’m in. I use my watch as a conversation piece, so I’m unlikely to wear one you see every day. The same goes for NYC style. Every week is fashion week. Even if people are going out for coffee they’re dressed smart, tailored and thoughtful.’ In shot: Rob wears watch by Bell & Ross.
