We enlist the expertise of Vogue Australia’s Kate Darvill (below) to get her take on the key trends and the most stylish purchases you should be adding to your wardrobe right now.

Words by Laura Griffiths

We all know the feeling: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia arrives, the street-style shots and runway coverage start rolling in, and suddenly your old favourites begin to feel just a little… well, old. With the shows on the horizon, a hit of sartorial inspiration is undoubtedly the perfect excuse to start filling your digital shopping bag, but for the sake of your sanity, it’s best to have a plan of action in place.

And who better to put us on the right track than Kate Darvill? Having worked both in the US and Australia at titles like Harper’s Bazaar, InStyle and Marie Claire, the Sydney-born stylist joined Vogue Australia in 2014, and has been imparting her knowledge as senior fashion editor ever since. So whether you’re looking to revamp your daily uniform or scouting for your next investment purchase, look to her key buys for the quickest way to be rid of that ‘nothing to wear’ feeling.

What do you buy when you want a quick refresh?

‘I try to invest in a few key pieces that help keep my wardrobe up-to-date without transforming or changing my style too much.’

Which accessory do you invest in time and time again?

‘A great flat shoe. As a working mother running around on appointments and shoots, it makes my life easier. Currently, I’m obsessed with Gucci jacquard slippers and the No.21 tie-knot sandals in a beautiful nude colour.’

What pieces are you looking forward to trying this season?

‘Asymmetric tops have been key this season. I love Dion Lee for work, and the whimsy of this Marni ruched top with denim for sunny lazy weekends with friends.’

What basic items do you rely on most in your wardrobe?

‘I’ve always loved shirts, whether my own or my husband’s. Bassike for the staples, Off-White for a quirkier take [and] I love Stella McCartney embroidered shirts.’
